I read about all the wieght everyone is losing and I am only losing about 3 pounds a week. I lost 21 pounds in 7 weeks before surgery by dieting. But since surgery In 7 weeks I had only lost another 22 pounds. THAT IS ONLY 1 POUND MORE THAN I LOST BUY JUST DIETING. I should be losing better after WLS than I can lose by just dieting. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? I feel like I had the surgery for nothing, like it's not helping me at all. Other than I don't really feel hungery at all. HELP!!

Those initial 21 lbs. that were lost were mainly water weight, and almost everyone who cuts their caloric intake loses weight quickly in the beginning. Those next lost 22 lbs. are great!! And, you probably wouldn't have lost that much in your next 7 wks. without WLS. Keep doing what you are doing, and perhaps add a little more exercise....and water..... in your day, and you will continue to see the pounds drop. Also, my doctor told me that although some people lose quickly in the beginning, it usually all evens out at the year mark. So, hang in there, and keep working your tool!! *Kam*

Diane... please don't get discouraged by your loss. All of us are unique in our build, metabolism, fat distribution, and how we lose weight. First, take a few minutes and write down what you are eating and how much fluids you are getting in. Keep a food diary for a few days... maybe it will shed a little light on the problem. Are you exercising? My loss slowed to nil after about 8 weeks.. since I began my exercise program, it is back on track. Next, if you can, go to FitDay.com and sign up for a free account. You can keep track of foods/fluids and exercise.. it's a good tool if you like to see progress in pie form....lol. Are you taking all your vitamines and suppliments? How much protein are you eating daily? All these factors come into play with your loss. Are you eating carbs? They are unnecessary calories. Make sure that you are eating at least 4-6 times a day. You body will go into starvation mode if you aren't eating enough. Finally, how much did you have to lose at the beginning. I only had about 125 to lose total, so my loss is slower than my friends who have closer to 200 to lose. I am taller, am a bigger boned person, so that all affects my losses as well.. Hope these give you some help in figuring out what's going on... Jacki K from PA

I am doing all the right things. I have a program and track my intake every day. I drink 6 - 8 glasses of water daily and I go to Curves and workout 5 days a week. the other two days I walk, bowl or swim. I have never missed a vitamin, and I am taking in 60 grams of protein each day and 80 to 100 grams of carbs. (that is what the nutritionist requires) she said we need at least 100 grams of carbs a day to have proper brain function. I had a total of 140 to lose. I am doing everything I was told to do. I am a perfectionist. Yet I am losing very slowly. Not sure why. But thanks for your help anyway

I think you are doing fine. My doctor has me on a different eating. Ia m to get 100 grams of protein in a day and 8 glasses minimum of water I usually drink 12 or more. I also have to watch my calories to make sure I am not going above 1000 a day. And my carbs are as few as possible. I can have carbs but just to keep it really low. So most of my carbs come from the few sugars that are in my meals and shakes. Also I have hit plateaus on adn off since surgery. Also are you weighing yourself every day or once a week. I know its hard becasue I also jump on the scale almost everyday adn I have to tell my self to stop it. Also what kind of exercise are you doing that makes a big differenc eyou might be getting muscle mass, which is heavier than fat. Have you been keeping measures of your body. when I wasnt losign on the scale I would wait till the end of the week and I was losing in inches around my body like half and inch off my arms , an inch in my ribs and so forth. Also your body is hormonal so youmight be having water retention and such. I know I called up my doc when I was frustrated and I was told my weight was were it was at becasue of water from my body trying to get the hormones in check. So as a female we have all sort of what ifs so dont sweat it and also we will be bopuncing in and out of depression so if you need me email me I am here.

I am a slow loser as well. Something that helped me feel positive is having calculated how much of my excess weight I have lost. Knowing that 20% of the extra weight is gone makes it easier to appreciate the one pound or two here and there. Plus, I look at it this way, losing slowly is supposed to be easier on your skin. Diane, My weight loss is very slow as well. I am up to a 36 pound weight since 11/1/05. You have to remember that we all lose weight differently. I was a slow loser on every diet program I tried prior to WLS and I am still slow after WLS. But you will get there just like everyone else just at a different pace. The one thing being a slow loser has forced me to do is to be very aware of what and how I am eating and how much I exercise. I follow the South Beach plan because it is something I can do for life. Also I read a post for someone that had WLS in 1999 that was experiencing regain. She followed a program similar to South Beach (high lean proteins along with complex carbs spread over several small meals during the day) and she not only lost the regained weight but she lost an additional 20 pounds within a few months. I feel like my Weight loss has increased since I started South Beach and increasing my exercise. I ride my exercise bike for 1-1/2 hours every other day and I workout with my ankle weights and dumbbells. Stay encouraged. There are many more like us than you think. 2 people I met that were slow losers reached their goal at about the same time as everyone else. They told me their weight loss was slow but steady whereas some people lose a lot, plateau for a while and then lose some more. Our bodies are not the same. Keep following the program and you will get there.

I know how you feel, I lost 30 lbs in the 3 mos prior to my surgery, and had only lost about 20 when I hit my first plateau, it lasted 3 weeks. I increased my exercise and protien and am now down an additional 5 lbs. (could be more than that this past week, I weigh in tomorrow) Although, I see other people who have the same surgery date as I (11/15/05) who have lost 30-40 lbs or better and I get frustrated. Not much help, but at least you know you're not alone! **hugs** Janet
