LIVE TO EAT....OR EAT TO LIVE?

Hi November Board!! First, let me say, that I am doing okay.....maybe even very good!! I manage to get my liquids, proteins and vitamins in almost every day (and many times even exceed the minimum requirements), and I am feeling back to my pre-sickness/pre-surgery self. And, my weight loss is slow, but it is coming off. HOWEVER, do any of you feel a sort of mourning for the old foods we so enjoyed eating? Not necessarlily the sugars or the fats, but even "healthy" food that we can now have. It seems that all my taste buds changed. Foods that once appealed to me, no longer do (examples: LF, SF puddings...ugh!!, chocolate flavored anything....double ugh!!, even meats & potatoes....ugh!!). I am no longer enjoying eating ANYTHING, except possibly, drinking my Crystal Light drinks. Sad. I used to live to eat, but now, I only eat to live. I suppose I will learn to handle this, too, but it is certainly a life-altering food philosphy for me. Guess I will continue to try new recipes, in hopes that SOMETHING finally does taste good. And, until then, I will just continue to enjoy all the other perks of this surgery......the added energy and the weight loss!! And, I'll "eat to live"!! Hope all is going well for you .......... *Kam*

kam i understand how u feel bout food not having the same appeal as it once did. i no longer want to eat but eat cause i know my body needs it. food doesnt have the same pleasure or taste as it once did and with having problems keeping it down it just doesnt seem worth it to me. so i drink and ive been trying to get more protein shakes in (actually starting them really- had trouble keeping them down too early out) if u find any recipes that catch ur taste buds let me know. in the mean time, like u ill just enjoy the benefits of my surgery and watch the scale go down. lisa

Sorry to hear that you don't have a "love affair" with any food, either. But, I guess it is good to know that we are in this together, right? Good luck to you during your journey!! *Kam*

Just had to post on here - I had my Lap RNY on 11-14-05. I too have noticed that my taste buds have changed. I no longer am hungry, but continue to eat because I know I need to. I have just been eating "normal food" again for 3 days and so far - so good. I made some homemade bean soup yesterday and enjoyed that. And beans are a good source of protein. Also I found soy nuts in the store and 3 tablespoons are 11 grams of protein. I can hardly stand the protein drinks due to the bad taste they have, so I concentrate on peanut butter, Atkins protein bars (19grams). I eat a lot of cottage cheese, eggs, cheese etc. Incidentally, I am down 44 pounds. Thanks for posting. Colette

Hi Colette....Isn't it amazing that our taste buds have changed so much? Anyway, I also agree with you about eating beans. They seem to go down without a problem, and they are a good source of protein. Tonight, my husband & I went to Ruby Tuesday's for dinner (hubby wanted a burger!!). I ordered the White Chicken Chili (a great deal for $3.99!!), and although I didn't care for the chicken in it, the beans were quite tasty. And, the really good part was that I didn't get sick. I also took a lot of it home with me, for lunch/dinner tomorrow. I highly recommend it. ------------Also, congratulations on your weight loss so far!! You are doing great!! *Kam*

Kam I know exactly what you are talking about. I miss that content full feeling that I use to have. Now the thing that I enjoy the most is my yummy Sunrise Grapefruit C-Lite! Just about all meat makes my pouchie feel like there are lead weights in it! It just doesn't seem worth it to eat it. I hope that this will fade... Have you tried the pepperoni nuked for 1 min in Micro? or the Soy chips? they are seem to go down really good for me and also have some protien. I know I should be eating more of my protein instead of sipping it! Pam J

Hi Pam........I, too, hope that the "lead weight" feeling will fade!! And, I had some of the soy chips Sat. night. They were okay.....tasted "harmless" and didn't effect my pouch in a bad way. Until that "super yummy" food does come along, I will probably continue to eat them. Good luck to you, & may you soon find something incredibly & sinfully delicious to eat that, of course, agrees with your new pouch!!!! *Kam*

I agree I now eat to live. I do seem to be eating often. Hopefully not to often. I still have not found that full feeling. Hoping it smacks me up side the head soon! I have issues with eggs, and milk. So I struggle to get protein in! Doing a tad better with water! Also started out with Curves again so hopefully that will help with more weight loss! Casey
