DOSE ANYONE KNOW THE ANSWER???
I tried out alcohol at home first. I had half a bottle of beer the first time and was full AND wasted. I went to bed and 4 hours later woke up with a hangover. Not pretty. Since then, I can handle 1 full beer, but I try to avoid it because of the carbs. I'm trying a mixed drink tonight.
I would really try out alcohol at home first. You really don't want to be on your behind or sick at a gathering.
Good luck!

Julie, I always thought we really couldn't drink again so I haven't even thought about it. Was never much of a drinker before anyway. A few weeks ago I found out from my bariatric nurse, who also had the surgery 3 years ago, that mild drinking was ok - after you're a year out - after I was at function where many postops including my nurse were drinking! All were over a year out, too. I agree with the others to try it at home first because everyone has told me that the buzz can be very quick and intense.

First, I will say that you should pose this question to your surgeon...they all have different rules. Now having said that, I have tried alcohol (mixed drinks) even though my doc doesn't want us to have any until a little further out...hey I'm young and still like to party now and then. Anyway, I will say that for ME I get drunk quick...and then get sober quick. That's just me...please be careful and be responsible whatever you decide.

Hello, I am so happy that everyone was so kind to help me with this question, thank you so much.
Well I went to a picnic graduation party saturday early afternoon, I tried a very small drink and very slow, I sweated a little, but gee it was so hot and real humid too.
Well that night, my son who is on tour was playing here in St Paul, and this is the entertainment I was talking about, now last time I went to see his show, I was 2 months out of surgery, it was hard to sit there for a very long time, There were so many people that I couldn't even see him, He was leaving town that same night so when I left the show early I was sad, and wanted this time to be different. It was different too, with the wieght loss my former husband stoped in his tracks and blurted out in front of his 4th wife to be, Julie you are beautiful, and I replied OF COURSE. Now I also meant that I was always beautiful.
I did have a small drink, it worked out for me, now that is a once a year thing, or maby twice, I was happy and proud of my self, I know I am going on a little to much, I am not sure why. I might not see my son again till winter, you can see how important it was, to me. I wouldn't recomend what I did to anyone, but I was careful and it worked ok for me, I am feeling better as time goes on, and any one who has had this surgery knows it takes a long time to recover mostly because of the food and trying things out as we go.
I am happy to have found this message board. Julie in Minnesota
Hi Julie (and November friends):
My doctor had recommended no alcohol for at least a year. I'm the type of person that you don't tell "NO". I had to try something. At the end of April, I went to Seattle for a business trip and decided to try something the first night when I didn't have any meetings. I ordered "Kahlua and Skim Milk" from room service. (I figured the skim milk would count for some protein and the kahlua has less alcohol per ounce). I got drunk on just one. But it was a nice buzz that only lasted a short time. I slept it off and felt fine the next day. I knew that when I went out for meetings the next night I could handle just one (with the "protein" thing in the back of my mind also). I ended up not having anything else to drink and have only tried that one more time.
I'm happy to hear others have tried it, with no ill effects. I'm not a drinker, but it's nice to be able to sip something when you are in that situation.

For now, anyway, I have decided to wait the 1 year out and not drink. Partly because I'm still 50+ pounds away from my goal and I don't want the extra calories. I don't feel like I'm missing anything 'cause I was never much of a drinker to begin with. Hope all went well... water with lime or lemon always works for me.
Hugs,
Tammy
