Topic: RE: Hernia Repair-Too Soon?
Sharon: I just had a hernia repair done on the 7th of July. Is the hernia causing you pain. Mine was causing me pain! I am only 9 months post-op from my RNY (7 months out when I had the hernia repair). Unfortunately, this means I will need another surgery later on down the road to take care of my apron. If it isn't hurting or causing you any other problems you can probably wait. My understanding is that hernias do not get smaller as we get smaller and they do not repair themselves either. More than likely you will have to have the hernia repaired, hopefully not until you have reached your goal weight or 18 months out and you can have both a repair and any excess skin removed at the same time. Your doctor can give you the best advise as to when you should have your hernia repaired. Hernias can be life threatening, so please keep your doctor apprised of your condition and comfort level. Hope this helps Pam Hastings

Hiya Tee!! WOW you must be on line right now LOL that was the quickest response!! I just bought the prettiest plummy purple "sleeveless" jummper in a L...I didn't try it on, it was on clearance for 7.00!!! and they did not have an XL so I bought it thinking I will eventually wear it...I came home tried it on and it fit with room to spare!!!!!! I love it!! I never took measurements and wish I had. If you don't mind me asking how expensive was your brachioplasty? I haven't had a chance to read your entire journal yet. Stay in touch! Debi P.S. Do you have yahoo or msn chat?

That is so great! You go girl! That is great news. I would love to start a more structured exercise plan!! Perhaps, I too, could start jogging/running! I don't think that I am quite ready for that....perhaps when I am closer to goal. I need to just start some brisk walking.....I know that starting can be half the battle...... You are an inspiration to me , I hope I can join you in meeting my goal. Congrats! Sharon Lap RNY 11/22/04 335/235/183

Hi Debbie! There was never a day in my entire life (maybe when I was really little) that I have ever walked out of my house with sleeveless shirts. At my highest weight my arms were 23". Before I had the arm lifts they were 19 1/2" now they are approx. 12". Legs are the same issue but not ready or can I afford to do them. I carried most of my weight in the extremeties. Keep me posted on how you are doing Tee

Hi Tee! Nice to meet you!! You are doing awesome! I Can't believe we share a surgery date and you already have you brachioplasty...I'm jealous. That is my biggest complaint. For years being heavy I would NOT wear sleeveless anything...I carried a lot of weight in my arms. I do wear sleeveless now, but am very careful not to raise my arm a certain way..what a pain!! I'm off to read your profile. Take Care, Debi

Topic: Hernia Repair-Too Soon?
My surgeons group (Emory in Atlanta) says that we should wait atleast 18 months (when the majority of weight loss is over) post-op to re-check my umbilical hernia that they found at the time of my Lap RNY. They say that the hernia usually gets smaller as people loose weight, sometimes to the point of not repairing . But, my stomach really protrudes....do you think I should have them check now as I see some of you have already had yours repaired?? What to do????
