gaining weight after gastric bypass
has anyone gained weight, after the year or so period? and how much? I am contemplating having the lap band done but my ins. won't cover it yet. Thanks!

Hi and thanks for checking in. All of us are just short of our 1 year post op anniversary, so not sure what will happen after a year post op, but I haven't had any weight gain at this point. My loss has been a lot slower over the last month, but has everything to do with no following the rules like I should. We have a couple of lap banders on here, but as for me, I stand 100% behind the RNY. I had the lap RNY and cannot believe what an amazing journey this has been. I like that there is no long term medical check ins with the RNY because I am a procrastinator and surely would not keep up with getting my fills had I had the lap band. Anyway, do your research, talk to some people who have had different types of surgeries and I wish you the best on your journey. You may want to contact the local hospitals in your area to see if they have support meetings you can attend to hear how others are dealing with their surgeries or talk to others who are pre-ops. Take care

I don't have the statistics on regaining on bypass...certainly there is a percentage that do, as with any WLS. I do know that a recent study put weight loss evening out at about 72 months post op for both bypass and band. The window of opportunity I see talked about for weightloss for a bypass patient is somewhere around 2 years. The band does not have that window due to the adjustments available.
You may want to post on the revisions board, when I have been there I've seen a couple bands going over to bypass but mostly the other way for whatever reason. I think it really depends on how you feel about the surgeries and what is good for you...you will find very strong opinions either way.
Good luck in your search!

I had a newer surgery called the vertical "sleeve" gastrectomy, which is restrictive-only like the lap band. I chose this after much research (see profile if you want more information).
I am doing great. I've lost 118 pounds at 11-1/2 months out and am still losing (though MUCH slower). It's a lot harder to stay compliant, but my appetite is still very restricted which is good. Just have to make the right decisions.
This is the best thing I've ever done and would do it again in a heartbeat.
One piece of advice...the MOST important decision you make is who will do your surgery. Choose VERY carefully, do your research.
