Hernia Repair-Too Soon?

My surgeons group (Emory in Atlanta) says that we should wait atleast 18 months (when the majority of weight loss is over) post-op to re-check my umbilical hernia that they found at the time of my Lap RNY. They say that the hernia usually gets smaller as people loose weight, sometimes to the point of not repairing . But, my stomach really protrudes....do you think I should have them check now as I see some of you have already had yours repaired?? What to do????

Sharon: I just had a hernia repair done on the 7th of July. Is the hernia causing you pain. Mine was causing me pain! I am only 9 months post-op from my RNY (7 months out when I had the hernia repair). Unfortunately, this means I will need another surgery later on down the road to take care of my apron. If it isn't hurting or causing you any other problems you can probably wait. My understanding is that hernias do not get smaller as we get smaller and they do not repair themselves either. More than likely you will have to have the hernia repaired, hopefully not until you have reached your goal weight or 18 months out and you can have both a repair and any excess skin removed at the same time. Your doctor can give you the best advise as to when you should have your hernia repaired. Hernias can be life threatening, so please keep your doctor apprised of your condition and comfort level. Hope this helps Pam Hastings
