Hair Loss?

Anyone experiencing this? I had surgery 11/22, and lately have been finding a ton of hair in my sink and on my bathroom floor. It is really starting to thin out. I get more than enough protein every day, and started using Nioxin. I am also thinking of trying Biotin Any suggestions? Will anything help, or am I just wasting money? 278/218/155

I started losing significant amounts of hair at 2-1/2 months out. By the 3rd month point, I started taking GNC Ultra Nourishair. I have gone from losing a fluffy palmful of hair to losing a thimble-full of hair. I am a very happy camper.

I am going to get some of the Nourishair today and try that too. Thanks for the info. Lori

Maureen, I had surgery on 11/29 and have been having issues with hair loss for about 3 weeks. I am getting in my protein and taking my vitamins including the biotin addition. So far I have not seen a difference in the amount of hair loss. But, I know that for the first month to 6 weeks, I had a very hard time getting my protein in. The result is hair loss and my doctor said as long as I am getting in the protein and vitamins, it should taper off within the next 4 weeks. I am lucky in that I can afford to lose a lot of hair! Maureen, I had surgery the same day as you and my hair loss started about 3 weeks ago. I just got my Nioxin today so I am going to try that. I am like you, make sure I get enough protein etc. I am hoping it doesn't last long but I did get my hair cut short so it isn't as noticeable. Cleaning out the shower drain everyday is pretty depressing though especially since the scale hasn't moved in 3 weeks....everything is easier to take if the scale moves downward, lol. I have noticed a small loss - kind like a shedding more than clumps or anything - I hear different ideas on whether Nioxin or Biotin really work - let us know what your experience is

We just had a big discussion about hair loss in my doctor's discussion group. This is what my doctor says...the hair loss starts about at 3-4 months, varies depending on the person and eventually stops with subsequent regrowth by about one year. It is not caused by how much protein you have but the the sudden drop in hormone level due to fast weight loss (the fat cells are filled with hormones). This might not be the most scientific explanation, but is the general drift. Things like Biotin or various vitamin combinations may help a bit...again your mileage may vary, but the hair loss is going to happen anyway..whatever we do. Just have to ride it out...it will grow back. That's the official word from my docs who do A LOT of WLS of all types. My hair was really thin to begin with and now is a horror...thinking about wigs...hmmmm...how would I look as a blonde? jo going bald but down 70 lbs today

Thank you for the clinical aspect of this - Just today while I was sitting in a meeting I noticed to my horror - that all of a sudden I ws holding a handful - not alot but very noticeable - handful of hair... I made a joke of it to my coworkers - but I thought darn it - I've been thinking this wouldn't happen but... oh well here we go

Coming from a veteran hairdresser... I don't think the Nioxin is going to help, but it won't hurt either Now the biotin I can't PROVE it will help, but I've been doing a little survey of my own on the boards and most people are saying it's helping, however, most of those people have been losing their hair for a few months already, so I am wondering would this be the time they would have started having regrowth anyway? I don't know... that's the question to be answered. SO, coming from another BALD but skinnier WLS patient to another... I went to GNC today. There are several types of biotin marketed. One is Biotin with other B's for women, one is Biotin 600 mcg, and the other is Biotin 2500 mcg. I purchased the biotin 2500 mcg. You can't get too much of any B vitamin (which is the family biotin falls into). If you take too much you will urinate the excess sorry if TMI. Good luck! Donna 255/193/135

I had surgery 11/04 and started losing hair about 3 weeks ago. I have been taking Biotin since 2 weeks post op - don't know if it helps or not. I have long hair so I see long loose hairs all over the house. I haven't clogged the shower drain or anything but my hair is definitely thinning out! I can't wait for the day regrowth starts....hope it doesn't come in gray Summer 240/175/140
