Calcium

Okay Now I Am Confused, I was under the impression that tums were used to help with digestion when I started back on solid foods. Is this correct? From what I have read from everyone, they are being used as a calcium supplement also or just that. Does everyone take tums to help with digestion or can this step be eliminated and another source of calcium found? Quite frankly they just seem to make me feel bloated. Just wondering, I know I read the book the doc gave me pretty thoroughly and tums were to be taken before a meal was eaten and not too exceed 8 tablets a day if they were high in calcium. Thanks Again, Elvera

I have not heard that tums were to help with digestion. Of course ask 100 doctors and you will get 100 different answers. My doctor and nutritionist recomend calcium citrate as a supplement. It is rather confusing. I take a liquid calcium by Lifetime. I find it at Vitamin World in the mall. I am trying a product called Up Cal. It is a powder. Valley Nutrition sent it to me with my order. As far as taking the tums with a meal, it probably has to do with the fact that it will absorb better with food. Lots of vitamins work better when taken with food. Melinda

I was told to take the tums - but it was for calcium - I was given a prescription for basicall Pepcid for acid - I think the previous post was right - taking it with food is just for beter absorption of the calcium - I never did do the tums - just tried to get calium from other sources - LOT's of yogurt & cottage cheese Now I also take a calcium supplement.

I was told to take Tums for the first month after surgery for calcium. I was also given a pepcid prescription for acid. After the first month I was told to switch to Caltrate or Viactiv. I use both, depends on the day and what i'm in the mood for. ~Angel 222/169/120 BMI 33 Lap RNY 11/10/04

I never needed anything for digestion!! Never had any problems!! Although it has been recommended to take Papaya extract to aid in digestion (found at Walmart). I was told that after studies were conducted on bariatric patients it was found that caclium cabornate as found in Tums was not broken done enough to be absorbed. Our new plumbing does not allow for stomach acids which would breakdown the cabornate!! The safest and best bet is to take Calcium Citrate!! www.acdlady.com/WLS_Calcium Good Luck Summer 240/178/140
