What's the difference between Citrate & carbonate? I don't think my doc specified which I should use... In fact I know he didn't -

We don't have the stomach acids to break down the carbonate! I know doctors were telling pateints to take carbonate but now there is evidence that the carbonate isn't being absorbed as well as Citrate. I've also been told that the extra carbonate leads to stones. To be safe I'd take Citrate!! Here is a link for the Calcium question www. acdlady.com/WLS_Calcium Summer

I take the Viactiv also. I know, I know should be taking calcium citrate but I couldn't find a chewable in the stores around here. Figure when the stuff I have runs out I'll buy the other in pill form. take care diane

I take Citracal, 3x a day. They can be found almost anywhere. (I get them at kmart, cheap) The pills are not large, about the size of a small peanut m&m, totally doable. Vickie

I take twinlab calcium citrate wafers (chewable) when I am on the go and I also take Lifetime calcium mag citrate in Blueberry. It is a liquid and don't taste bad! I get it at Vitamin World in the mall. Melinda

I take Citrical and nope, I don't particularly like it. It's too big to swallow so I cru**** into a powder and wa**** down with juice or a protein shake. Kinda chalky/gritty.

I was taking Caltrate D for the first couple of months and then I switched to Viactiv 2x day. The doctor never told me that it was bad for me. When I was taking the Caltrate, I had to cut it in half because it was so big. ~Angel 222/170/120 Lap RNY 11/10/04

Hi there, My docs recommend that we use the Viativ as an occasional treat. It's yummy and easy to take but if that's your main source of calcium the carbs will be a bit high. Also, we need the citrate as everyone has pointed out. A man in my support group ate Tums for calcium early on and popped them like candy. He wound up with stones and another surgery. Also, a friends sister who had the RNY has not been taking adequate calcium and now, a year post op has bad osteoporosis. So compliance is pretty damn important, I'm taking my Citrical 3 times a day. Hugs to all my November cousins, Jo
