The issue of Hair loss

Since there have been quite a few posts lately on this subject I thought I would put my two cents here instead of all the threads: There's really nothing you can do for your hair loss. It's not a folicle issue so special shampoos might feel good, but they will not help. It's a systemic issue... your body will not let your hair grow for fear you are losing too much weight and starving it! It's just a survival technique and it will pass eventually. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Here's the good news: http://www.paulayoung.com I'm getting one soon! Donna veteran hair dresser...

Wow! I have lost some hair, quite a bit actually, but not near enough to need a wig!! I notice it the most after washing my hair. I have noticed though, that the more protein I get, I don't lose it, so for me, I will bypass the wig for now and head straight for the meat counter....lol! Teresa

Teresa, I don't know about you, but I don't have much hair to begin with! I have a friend who had LOTS of hair and about 6 months after her WLS she started losing handfulls at a time... and ended up with as much as I started with before my WLS... if I lose ANY my scalp will be showing (which it actually has started to do). I met a lady at our support group who uses a partial wig on top (she got it from paulayoung.com). She pulls her own hair through the wig so you can't even tell she's wearing anything! I didn't have this surgery to be thin and BALD! So I plan on getting a top piece for the duration of my baldness. Donna

Well, I have to admit, I do have alot of hair....I have naturally curly hair, and its about down to my bra strap. I did get it layered because it was all pretty much the same length...The layering seemed to help it style better since I have lost some hair. My cousin, who is a beautician, and who also had the surgery, was the one who layered my hair. She said with my hair, that no one besides me and her would probably ever be able to tell, but I tell ya, sometimes when I am in the shower and combing the conditioner through my hair, my eyes about pop out of my head...I have always lost alot of hair anyhow, but now it seems double what I used to. I just pray that it won't be noticeable. I know I am pretty fortunate with the naturally curly hair...If it was straight, it would probably be alot more noticeable! Good luck to all of you!!!

PS My friend whom lost her hair 6 months after WLS got in 100 grams of protein per day and took all her vitamins... so for her, the protein didn't help.

Thanks for the posting. Yes, I've just begun this. Yuck...I had thin hair to begin with and the past few days its been coming out practically in handfuls. Luckily its curly and I can fluff it up...but I feel SO bald. NOT my favorite part, but small price to pay for 60 pounds lost! Jo

Mine is starting to come out as well but I think instead of the wig I might go for the Melissa Etheridge look. Shave it off and let it all grow back. What do ya'll think?
