Pam - Thanks for the heads up! I was really surprised that the cookie made me feel so bad. In a way it was a good thing though - Now I won't be eating a bunch of cookies that I shouldn't be eating anyway! I'll stick to sugar free popcycles. Debbie

Okay I was really bad last night - all this talk of food sent me to my old habits - I'm one that I see a hamburger commercial & all of a sudden think - "I need a hamburger" even after I just ate dinner - so you can see how easily affected I am - Anyways - I ate last night two whole chocolate chip cookies - ohhhhhh my stomach hurt so bad & my head was so dizzy - I had to eat a piece of cheese to counter the sugar with some protein... then I was so fulll I hurt more - I felt sooooo dumb. Think I'll stick with my protein... old habits...

Okay, I must be the REALLY bad one of the group!! LOL I found out I don't dump on sugar, at least with what I have tried. My doctor said not to go over 18 grams of sugar, which is a lot higher limit than most doctors give their patients. I have had chocolates from hubby and son's chocolate hearts for Valentine's Day. I think I had about 6-7 over a 5 day period, but no more than 1 at a time. I have been eating popcorn, but think I learned my lesson with that one tonight. We went to the movies and I was hungry and dug into the popcorn hubby and my 2 year old got. I ate several handfuls and then my tummy wasn't feeling so great and I got really tired. No dizziness or anything. I think it was a strong warning that I need to stay on track. I also made some no bake cookies the other day and have eaten probably 3 in the last 3 days. I don't get sick, but they do make me feel a little different, which keeps me from eating more than one at a time. Of course, with my little 1-2lb increase in weight this week, I am doing my best NOT to eat anything off program. I was hoping I would dump beyond belief and since I don't, I have to hold myself especially responsible. I actually ate pretty decently before the surgery, but the week before my period, I would binge like crazy and I have noticed myself trying to do that lately. Sugar is definitely a weakness that I AM GOING TO OVERCOME...by not eating it anymore!! LOL I didn't have my guts rearranged to screw it up for a cookie or piece of candy and I know I am stronger than this. Actually, I am grateful for my stumbles though because it shows me how far I have come. Last Valentine's Day, I would have eaten a whole box of chocolates in a single DAY and I am being pretty hard on myself for 6 pieces over practically a week! Pat on the back for that one!! Live and learn, right? I am starting back up to Overeaters Anonymous next Monday. I went before surgery and knew I still wanted to go after surgery to remind me that I still have the want to overeat, even if I cannot do it as I did before surgery. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys off the hook and that the award of being the "BAD GIRL" of the group!! Tomorrow's a new day Erica

Erica, I am here to support you, I am also one of those people who decided one day that, "Oh that warm Krispy Kreme donut smells wonderful, I'll sneak one bite, go throw-up and never do something stupid like that again." Well the dumping never happened after the one bite, and was I mad at myself. So now I have learned I can have a bite of something sweet when I am craving, then throw the rest away (Grandma would be so upset with me for wasting the food!). Sorry to disappoint everyone, this is not an easy task. Some days I behave better than otehrs. I like the philosophy that tomorrow is a new day. I believe we all try our best and that no one is perfect. Good luck! Lori 331/259/150

Hi all, Unfortuneately I am one of the ones who don't dump on sugar. I actually complained to my doc about this like it was his fault! What makes me sick are things that are oily, fried or just heavy (like pudding). Since I was eating a lot of fast convenient food before I figure the Lord knew what he was doing and is making me dump on what my evils were! I have had some chocolate but eat it real slow so the urge gets out of my system after one piece. I also have some of the SF kind and I keep it in the house. For me part of wanting it is knowing that it just isn't available. If I have asy access to it, then it's not as appealing sometimes. Or like with M&M's, I'll do something OCD and have like one of each color (5) or pick an even single number. I think my biggest foil is my hubby. He'll snatch something out of my hand or off my plate before I even have the opportunity to think of finishing it. Especially when we eat out! No leftovers! He's eating for 1 3/4 people and still looks like a stud muffin! *sigh* Some people are like that but I ain't one of them. So, in short, know that whatever you try, you can't have too much of it! If your brain doesn't stop you your pouch will! Carey 243/181/130

Hi Diane, No one is perfect and the thing I think everyone needs to keep in mind is moderation, determining if cravings are really head hunger or your body's way of telling you they need a specific nutrient. If I'm craving something and the craving doesn't go away its usually my body telling me I need a specific nutrient that is in a specific food. For instance, Pre-op I rarely ate beef. I only ate beef when my body will begin craving a hamburger (thats the only way I'll eat beef and when its cooked very well done). If this craving lasts for a day or more, then I eat a hamburger as that is my body telling me I need iron, whereas if it goes away than it was 'head hunger' (for me I'm not one to have head hunger about beef- just trying to give an example). Another example is Chocolate. Now chocolate, for me, is both a head hunger AND a lack of nutrients. When I have a craving for chocolate is it because I am stressed and want a comfort food or is it because my body is lacking whatever properties chocolate has in it? It is a fact that Chocolate has specific properties that are healthy.. its all the sugar they pump into chocolate products that are unhealthy (in ancient times Cocoa was used medicinally). I can and DO eat chocolate Post-Op. But I do not eat a whole bar, I do not buy 'milk chocolate' or 'sweet chocolate'. I buy dark, bitter chocolate and have 1 square (sugar content of 6 grams for a much larger serving than what I eat). I know I need chocolate and beef when I menstrate. So I have a bar of chocolate in my cupboard specifically set aside for that time of the month (it helps relieve my cramps and helps my mood) or if I'm extremely stressed and the stress is causing bad health. I have been unable to tolerate beef PO and my body shows this as now my iron levels are starting to drop. My aunt had this surgery and she can eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.. just not as much. She states it is extremely difficult to lose weight (she is a year PO) and she has to fight with herself to eat healthy. I think if anyone of us is really having a hard time differentiating between a body's need for a food item vs. fighting the head hunger then working with a nutritionist / psychiatrist may be beneficial I hope this is helpful to some of you!
