Alcohol?

Ok, I have a few friends that had this surgery around the same time as me....both have had either wine or a mixed drink (not a sugared mixed drink). I haven't tried at all, because although my Dr. didn't really mention it, I didn't know if the body tolerates this or if it was allowed. I am not a big drinker anyhow....Maybe I would have a drink 3-4 times a year....I just wanted to see if anyone else has had any alcohol and if so, how it sat with you. Both my friends had no problems at all, but I didn't know if this is normal or not....So, anybody tried?

I haven't tried anything with alcohol yet. I'm not a big drinker either, but when I did it was sweet stuff. I have been told that alcohol can cause you to become dehydrated. I'm probably not gona try it just yet. Good question for my nutritionist!!! Melinda

I thought of the dehydration too!! Doesn't hardly seem worth it to me!! I don't think I will try it yet. I was surprised when my friends did over New Years, because both had their surgeries in November also!! Oh well....I guess when I DO choose to, if I do, I will stick with something not sweet for sure!! That won't be for a long while though!

I have drank alcohol on a few different occassions and got a long just fine!! I mixed vodka with crystal light and had a few bloody mary's. I have stayed away from beer because of all the carbs and the carbination and I stay away from the sugar. I've been just fine with it! One thing, I used to be able to drink bloody mary's all night long and now I have one or two and I start feeling tipsy much, much quicker!!!!! I had heard that it can be hard on the kidney's combined with all of the protein we are eating?! But, my nutritionist said if it is in moderation it is okay!

I am not a big drinker, either before or after surgery. I just wouldn't. I was told at one time that I shouldn't have alcohol for at least a year so I wouldn't hurt my pouch. There is so much sugar in alcohol anyway, why would you want the calories, and you will be a cheap drunk. Why take the chances? You had this surgery to use as a tool to take off weight, and alcohol does not help. Plus, sometimes alcohol makes your inhibitions lower, so you may want to eat. Just my 2 cents. Pam

Also the liver is breaking down all this fat in our bodies, and working overtime; it doesn't need the extra workload. I was told not to have it until the weight stabilizes. I am pretty sure a drink would not hurt though. Depends if you are the type to test the waters. Good luck!

Hey Teresa, What I understand from my doctor is that now that we've had surgery, alcohol is a much bigger strain on the liver. I was told to stay away from alcohol as well due to the high sugar content. Talk to your doctor for the best advise. I'm sure that every doctor has something slightly different to say. I don't think one drink would do you too much harm overall although I'm choosing to stay away from it. Everything in moderation, right? Good luck, Debbie

I had the surgery 1st of nov. my dr. has been doing only this surgery for 25 years, of course this is why i chose him, he told me I could have a mixed drink after Jan 15, the 1st stage, he said of course to drink in moderation and advised me the first time i drank to do it at home or make sure i had people close to me with me and to take it slow because it doesnt take us much anymore.

Although I know everyones doctor is different, mine says no alcohol for 1 year post op. Don't know if I'll wait a whole year, but not ready to try it yet!
