Hot and Itchy after eating
Everytime I eat protein, I get extremely hot and itchy all over. It doesn't matter if it is whey protein, soy protein, a slice of cheese, tuna...I get hot, very itchy all over and nauseous. It's to the point that I don't want to eat protein at all even though I will...because I have too...
Any suggestions??
Hey Stacy,
I don't know about the itching, but I sometimes get hot and sweaty after I eat (usually what I'm eating is protein). It's almost what I would assume a hot flash would be like. It lasts for about 1/2 hour and then goes away. VERY STRANGE!! Someone told me that it was a sign of dumping but I don't think that's the case here because we haven't eaten anything with sugar. Hang in there and I think it will probably resolve itself after awhile but whatever you do, don't stop eating the protein. It's better to be sweaty and itchy than sick and bald!!
Take care,
Debbie
Hi Stacy,
It may be a blood sugar spike/dip? I was diabetic before surgery and for the first month (sometimes I still get it if I'm late in eating) I would get flushed, sweaty and nauseous. I didn't have the itchiness, but it could be that you are getting itchy because of the sweating.
I was also told by the bariatric coordinator that some Post-Ops become hypo(er?)glycemic. I would talk to your doc about this to see if you should be eating more often-- or eating, then drinking something other than water to keep your blood sugar levels even. Its when the blood sugar levels change that can cause the symptoms, doesn't matter what you eat (all I eat is protein too). Well, I take that back. It can be less or worse depending on what you eat.
I am no longer diabetic (yeah!) and these types of symptoms do not occur often. However I was hypo(er?)glycemic before I became diabetic so I have my meals on a pretty strict schedule.
Try eating more frequent meals (or protein drinks) and eat slower to see if that helps! Good luck!

It could still be a variation of dumping, where as you are not eating anything with sugar....if the protein has lactose in it or if the shake is made with milk, dairy products we know the sugar is from lactose....not everyone tolerates dairy after surgery even if they did before surgery. Another possibility..do you take medicine with your meal...could it be a drug reaction and just coincidence you are taking it with protein? Have you tried Hood Carb Milk...it has 3g of sugar, compaired to 11-13g that regular milk has....see if the reaction is reduced...experiment. Im not sure I can explain the tuna....are you eating it plain or mixing it with something....can you eat chicken or other meats...cottage cheese...yogurt?
Or is this reaction the same for EVERYTHING you eat..since basically its protein first every meal....or should be. In that case..are you eating too fast...not chewing well enough...Im just throwing things out, I hope you figure it out.
Good Luck
Mic
ok, i also get that way after eating. and again, mainly protien. i was told that it could be my metabalism kicking in. i dont think it is dumping at all. have had that, and not the same thing. cause i dont feel hot when i eat something with sugar in it. but i dont think everybody has that problem. i work with 3 other girls who had the same surgery, 2 with same doctor as me, and they dont have that problem. they are also cold more often than not and i am warm or hot most of the time. i think everybodies body handles it a little different. as much has i hate breaking out in a sweat from head to toe, i dont mind to much as long as i think it is a good thing.
