I am concerned and need some advice. Pre-op I never had acid reflux but a few weeks ago I went to my doctor with stomach pain and he put me on nexium. Everything I have read indicates that after surgery you will not have a problem with heart burn. I don't want to have to take nexium all the time as its expensive. I had my gallbladder out when I had gastric bypass surgery. Help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jan M.

My doc put me on pepcid - I have to take it for three months after surgery - it's part of his regiment - Don;t know much about this but maybe the stomach has an adjustment/healing time where it's necessary? Sorry... someone else probably has a better answer.

I was taking Nexium prior to surgery, then I stopped after surgery and took pepcid chewable for the first few weeks, Surgeon says its to help soothe the healing new pouch. I was noticing that some foods seem to feel rough about halfway down and decided to go back on my Nexium to discourage any ulcer activity(Nexium helps to heal eroding esophagus due to acid reflux). Last week my PCP took me off my blood pressure meds and the nexium, 6 days and so far so good. If your PCP put you on it, contact you surgeon and verifiy its the right course, if your Surgeon put you on it, contact them and see if its for short term..and what the goal is...do they think its an ulcer? Also tomato based products, citrus products, and spicey foods trigger the discomfort, modify your intact and try a few days without the nexium to see if thats the problem. Its time released so it may take 2+ days to notice if its back. Good Luck Michelle

WOW - I had severe acid reflux PRIOR to surgery. The surgery cured it completely. No more nexium. I can now drink orange juice and spicy food - which i completely avoided before surgery. I am sorry I dont have any advise for you. Pepcid is cheaper and might do the trick. Colleen
