Hi everyone, I went to a Nutrition class and learned a way to calculate how much protein I needed. I was shooting for 6O g and was getting in around 45 g. Last week I found out I needed between 73-91 g. So I jumped in increased meals to 6 small meals and have been getting in all my protein and the scale actually moved twice this week . I was getting worried because I was losing so slow. NOW I FEEL LIKE I'M ALWAYS EATING OR DRINKING SOMETHING......FEELS LIKE A JOB BUT THE PAY IS GREAT....WEIGHT LO$$ !! I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your weekends!! (((HUGS))) Summer 240/190/140

Teresa, This is what my Doctor suggests for MONTH 2 to 6 AM MEAL 8 ozs milk (i drink carb countdown milk) 2 to 5 oz protein (I usually eat 1 egg) 1 to 2 ozs fruit or veg (usually don't) MID MORNING protein snack protein shake *(if you can't get all your protein in from food) NOON MEAL 2 to 5 oz protein (usually something like 2 meatballs or chkn) 1 to 2 oz fruit or veg (usually don't) AFTERNOON MEAL 6 oz low carb yogurt or milk (again carb countdown choc milk) 2 ozs fruit (usually don't) * sometimes I have a Q-smart bar PM MEAL 2 to 5 oz protein shrimp, chinese chkn, meatloaf, fajita meat -about 3 oz 1 to 2 oz fruit or veg (salad baby greens) EVENING PROTEIN SNACK protein shake *( only if you didn't get in enough protein) 73 - 100 oz of water or equiv. I do the best I can I usually don't eat the fruit and sometimes have the veg (baby greens)! I usually have 1 shake in the AM and add a scoop of protein powder to my S/F hot cocoa in the PM. I push myself to follow the guidelines but somedays it just doesn't happen. TOO MUCH TO EAT Of course everyone should follow there own Doctor's food guidelines! My doctor use to not let us have fruit vegs milk or protein shakes. So I am very happy he was adopted new guidelines which helps me get in a lot more PROTEIN and calcium! Hope that answered your question if not...Ask away Are your Doctors guidelines similar at this STAGE???? Anyone? Take Care, Summer

Thanks a bunch Summer!! My guidelines right now are pretty much protein. I am not allowed fruits and veggies really. I can put onions in food, or relish in my tuna or chicken salad, but as far as salad, veggies or fruit, I can't have them. Of course, the protein is what I need more of. Its good to have an idea though, of how others are getting all their protein in, because I am certainly struggling!! I love low carb yogurt right now too!! I can add an extra one each day!! Plus add one more protein meal and maybe a glass of milk and I will be doing good!! Thanks!!! Teresa

Teresa, Good Luck with adding more protein. I was struggling too before I was allowed protein shakes! I don't eat the fruit but I like having the option! I am happy about the veggies being added. I missed salad. My DH laughs at me because I think of a chicken soft taco as a meal. I eat the meat out and then add a dab of dressing to the lettuce and enjoy a miny salad then I toss out the tortilla........NO Dishes!!! Oh BTW, you need to update your profile Summer

Summer, Was there a formula for figuring how much protein you need?? How did you arrive at 73 -91gms?? B

Hi fellow Cali girl, I have a chart and a formula. The formula I have is for BMI < 30 it is 1 g protein for every 1 kilogram of weight. (2.2 lbs per kilogram). So just divide your weight by 2.2 and you'll get your protein intake needed. If BMI is > 30 let me know your height and frame size (small med or large) and I'll check the chart and let you know! I am 5' 5.5 at med frame so I need 73-91 grams. My doc gave me both chart and formula since I'm close to 30 BMI! As we weigh less our protein needs will slightly decrease. But of course follow your own Doctor's guidelines! Have a great day! Summer

I would like to know the formula as well. I am not doing well at getting all the protein in. I am lucky to get 50 grams a day. My doctor says that I can eat pretty much whatever I want now as long as it agrees with me. Both he and the Nutritionist do not agree with the low carb thing and want me to be eating fruits and vegetables with every meal. I do ok most of the time. I am just really worried because I am losing really slow. I am almost 10 weeks out and have only lost 36 pounds. Shelly 302/266/150

Hi Shelly, My doc isn't crazy about adding back the dairy, fruit and veggies because he feels it slow's down weight loss. However he is trying to provide us with healthy guidelines. Of course he wants us to avoid the starchy vegetables. I'm usually full from the protein and don't eat the fruit. I posted the formula as you asked ...please check the entire thread! Thanks Summer. If I did it right I need 82 grams of protein a day. I have a harder time getting in all my water than I do the protein. I never really drank a lot to begin with. The colder it is outside and it is very cold, it's just harder for me to drink the water. As for what I can eat. My dr says I can eat anything as long as I get my protein in first. I have to eat small amounts and eat slowly but I am allowed to eat fruits and vegs. I don't eat much fruit, just once in a while. I avoid bread, rice and pasta. At the moment I'm trying to eat some oatmeal that my dr's office gave me a sample of . It has 16 grams of protein but it tastes yucky. ~Angel 222/181/120 BMI 35.3 Lap RNY 11/10/04
