I had my surgery November 29 and I am doing really good. I have lost 41 lbs. I am worried because I can eat sweets and they don't bother me at all. The doctor told me if I didn't stop eating sweets and drinking Pepis that I would not lose.... HELP

Kim. I hate to break this to you but your doctor is right. Why did you have the surgery if you are going to keep the same habits. When you mean sweets do you mean like candy, ice cream, etc... You are talking the sugar free kind right? Some people do not dump and those people are not more fortunate than the ones that do dump because the ones that do dump know there limit. I, like you can eat about anything at this moment but I have not tried soda or sweets that were not sugar. You may want to think why you had this surgery before you take another drink of that Pepsi or pop something in your mouth. Sorry to sound so critical but we need to get you focused. Toya

Kim, I agree with Toya on this one.... I "dump" when I try to eat pasta or rice. But I had a chocolate chip cookie the other day and it went down without a problem! Instead of being happy that I can have junk food I became stressed out. This isn't good for me to know that I can eat "bad" foods! But, because we are all human, we need to understand that we're going to push boundaries when it comes to our addiction to food. Your doctor told you that you couldn't have soda and sweets because if you do, you will not change any of your old behaviors. We all cheat and do stupid things to our bodies. So, instead of eating another cookie, I announced to my family that the cookies were being thrown out in a 1/2 hour if they didn't disappear. All you need to do is find enough strength in you to get rid of the soda and junk food and make the announcment to your family that you cannot eat this stuff anymore. It's so hard to do but you can do it! I'm happy that you're losing weight still....you deserve it! I'm down 54 lbs. myself, and I have screwed up a few times but it isn't too late for me to get back on track! YOU CAN DO IT! Take care Megan B

I am 8 weeks out-Lap RNY Nov 22. and I CAN eat sweets too! I do not eat them like before though! I may a cookie or a bite-size candy bar....but I stop there! I am almost 60 lbs. down so I guess these "little" cheats are not killing me! I can't eat meat or pasta though! I have not tried soda (except for a sip)....still on the dilluted juices, milk, and crystal light!

Kim, This surgery has given you an opportunity to become healthy and lose weight. However, you only have a certain time frame in which you will benefit from your WLS. Why not try to lose as much as you can before that window of opportunity closes. WLS is the last resort please please don't waste it. We support you!!!!!! You can do it. Maybe you can go see a therapist there has to be a reason why you are sabotaging yourself. Take Care sweetie!! Summer

Hi Kim, Ok, now please don't take this as an insult. I have a question-does your doc require follow ups with a nutritionist and some kind of therapy? My doc requires all his patients have monthly group meetings with our nutritionist and pyschotherapist. If you do not, please look into it. For you. First, food is more than physical to obese people. It can even become like an addiction in the same way alcohol and drugs can. I'm not saying that is you. But, think over the reasons you had surgery and reaffirm them to yourself. Look in the mirror and remind yourself. Have you celebrated yourself for your 41 pounds? It makes me wonder what is creeping in your head that is letting you sabotage what drastic measures you took to get healthy? Now, on the flip side, I do not believe in deprivation. I don't believe that is healthy either. The key is moderation. You are human, you will have something you probably shouldn't. Don't beat yourself up over it. Enjoy a bite or two once in a while, but don't make it a regular habit of it either. Please look into talking to someone, either in a group with others going through the same thing or one on one if you would like to really get down to the nity grity and change yourself physically, mentally, spiritually for the positive. I hope you understand what I am saying and please know I am not putting you down in any way or I would not be here. I truly wish you the best of luck. Laura

I can eat them to but that doesn't mean I do. I have had a small slice of birthday cake twice since 11/17/04 without dumping...I would not make it a regular practice and soda is supposed to be a NO NO even if diet.

I have no idea if I can eat sweets or soda because I haven't tried it. I was told not to drink carbonated drinks so I don't. As for cake or whatever,, I just went to a birthday party on sunday and there 3 different kinds of cakes and 2 boxes of dunkin donuts. I looked at it and walked away. Everyone said just take a small piece. It's a choice. I chose not to partake in it. I've had a piece of Russell Stover Sugar free candy twice since surgery. After one piece I walk away. I've had a taste of ice cream made w/ splenda. That's about it. I just want to go thru life believing I will dump if I eat sugar. I don't know if it's true or not. But if I think it I won't try it. I don't want to find out if I can eat it. Having this surgery was such a major decision for me that it would be like undoing what I did. I took this decision seriously. I put 2 yrs into researching it and I prayed to God to help me thru it. So I just think it is easier not to eat it and ruin all the progress I have made so far. Mind you, I'm not judging anyone. I know how hard it is to walk away from it. But you need to say to yourself.. " what is more important? YOU or the sweets" You are!!! Good luck and chalk it up to a lesson learned. You have made such great progress. You should be proud of yourself!! ~Angel 222/184/120 Lap RNY 11/10/04
