I keep hearing alot of post-ops talk about drinking Gatorade. Are we allowed? I thought it was NO SUGAR at all? What does everyone drink? I'm really sick of Crystal Light and I think Diet Snapple is gross. Help!

Re: No Sugar - It depends on your surgeon's preferences. I am allowed 16 grams or less... they call it the 'sweet sixteen' rule. I've read others who are only allowed 2 grams. For me I like the up to 16 because I HATE using unnatural sweeteners. I haven't dumped unless it was over that (the only reason I know is that I had a yogurt one time and was getting the sweats- it didn't even occur to me to check the sugar content; I now eat the Carb watch one which has like 8 grams of sugar- the one I ate when I got sick had 23 grams. I also took a cough drop and I got very naseaus with it- my doc stated it was due to the sugar content of the cough drop!). I also don't drink flavored drinks. I just can't stomach them as they taste funny to me. I was a tea drinker and now my teas (herbal-unsweetened how I've always had them) taste bad to me. I have water, water, and more water! The citric acid makes me sick (Fruit 2-O, crystal light, etc) so I can't drink those anymore. Oh, I can drink hot chocolate which is great this time of year! For a Gatorade brand product that is sugar free try Propel. It's very sweet and tastes decent (too sweet for me, but then my tastes for sweets have really changed). Hope this helps!

My surgeon has stated that Gatorade mixed with water is fine once per day. I haven't had it so I can't tell you what it tastes like. I drink water, lo carb apple juice, milk, lipton unsweentend lemon tea and crystal light with water. Hope that helps.

Noel, Well, I think it is like everything else with this surgery-trial and error. Some people can handle sugar and others dump easily. If it is something you really, really want, then try some diluted first and see how you do and if it is palatable to you that way. Or, you could be brave and try a small amount undiluted. They only thing is, I don't suggest you have very much, per day, per week, because it is still sugar and there are other things that would be better to drink. It may not seem like much, but check out sugar grams and calories per serving and ask yourself if those empty calories are really worth it. Good luck Laura

Hi Noel I haven't had an urge to try Gatorade . I actually stay away from sugar and I don't put anything in my mouth that has more than an average of 3g. I'm not the biggest fan of H2O so I drink crystal light and lots of Fruit2O. I also discovered Carb Countdown Fruit Juice and the taste is great . Susan LAP RNY 11/24/04 374/325/190

I have been told no to Gatorade. Too much sugar...as far as knowing how much sugar you can have. I use the guideline of....if ONE of the first 3 ingrediants of ANYTHING is ANY type of sugar, then I do NOT eat or drink it. I make sure the sugar and sugar alcohol amounts are VERY low. With this colder weather have you tried, sugar free hot chocolate? It is really good, and hits the spot nicely. I enjoy unsweetened ice tea as well. Good luck and God bless!
