I am thinking this may be why I am losing at a slower rate. I am still happy with my loss 40# at 8 wks. I just know that for the first week post surgery I was out of my meds and I didn't take it and I lost 14# in one week. Has anyone else experienced slow loss and taking thyroid meds?

Hi Sandra, I take armour thyroid for hypothyroidism and personally, it helped me lose weight when I first went on it. I also take paxil for anxiety and that causes weight gain! But, I had surgery on 11/2/04 and I've lost 50 pounds so far. 40 pounds is still VERY good! Have you talked to your doctor about your thyroid meds? Don'y be so hard on yourself.....you're doing awesome! Megan B

Hi Sandra, I am not taking meds but I am losing weight about at the same rate as you. I go to the doctors on Friday so I don't have an official weight loss total but I think I have lost close to 40 pounds in two months. It seems slower then others but I look at it this way...It took me two months to loose twenty pounds on a diet so this is much faster Good luck on your journey! Teresa

I am taking synthroid for my thyroid. Cause I used to have Graves Disease (Hyperthyroid) then I had radiation and became Hypothyroid and gained a TON of weight. I finally have the right dosage and I don't know if it is slowing me down or not. I go for my apt on the 12th but I know I am close to 37lbs lost since 11/29. I just know that if you don't take your meds it messes with your metabolisim and energy level and that is something I would not want to do. But you can always call your doctor and have your levels checked. Maybe you should be getting more. But to me 40lbs is amazing!!!! Keep up the awesome work Michelle

Sandra- I have taken SYnthroid since I was 16. I do know that as I would gain weight they would have to increase my dosage of medicine. As I lost weight it would get smaller. Now I am down about 40 pounds in 7 weeks. I am at the same dosage but should get my levels checked. If you are hypothyroid, taking your meds should only help the weight come off. Your 14 pound weight loss the first week is pretty typical. I dont think it really had anything to do with your meds especially since they stay in your system for about a week after you stop taking them. If youre concerned talk to your doc, but it should be helping you. 40 pounds in 8 weeks is wonderful!!!!!! Janet

Sandra, I am hypothyroid as well... matter a fact I have no thyroid gland liike one of your other posters. I could not take meds immediately after surgery anyway... doc would not allow... PCP was not worried and said I could go for about 2 - 3 wks without major problems. I lost well then.... since then considerably slower.... same weight for about 3 wks... PCP has now ordered labs to see if I need to increase thyroid dosage.... apparently in some people sometimes meds are not absorbed as well after surgery. I think you should check with your PCP as this CAN have an effect on your weight loss and overall metabolic rate. Good luck B

I too have had a hypothyroid problem since I was sixteen. I have lost 42 lbs so far since 11-04 which is actually good for my weight group!! Have you had any hypo symptoms? You may not be absorbing your meds as well. I agree with the others see a doctor about the correct dosage for you now. I suggest you see an endocrinologist regarding your thyroid/WLS. I think your weight loss is great!! Losing 40 lbs sure feels good doesn't it? Best Wishes! Summer
