Food gets stuck, and nose starts running...
Hi everybody! Just wanted to know if you had this experience:
I do not generally dump. Had only very few incidents with it at the beginning. However, I get a feeling of food stuck in my throat when I guess I overfill my pouch a bit or hurry (the habit I have a hard time to get rid of). At that point I stop and wait for it to fall down - it gets better if I burp. I don't feel a need to throw up, however my nose starts running all of a sudden and I start sneezing like crazy. Is it an allergy? I never had this happen to me before the surgery... Please advise.
Lena,
Hate to tell you but that sounds like your dumping. I get runny, stuffy nose when I've eaten too much, or too fast or too much carbs. Mostly from the carbs. if your eating 5 times a day (3 meals and 2 snacks) limit each to 3-4 grams of carbs. That should help. Also really slow down when eating between bites. It takes your stomach 10-15 minutes to realize it is full. Hope this helps.

Thanks Tee for your reply. I thought dumping was associated with throwing up. My doctor described it as "You would not want to live, when you dump". I had what he describes too, at the beginning. Now I only feel a bit uncomfortable due to sneezing. It happens mostly when I hurry eating (hate those business lunches, when I do not pay attention). I have only 3 meals a day, no snacks. I drink only Isopure to supplement protein between meals. I try to eat no carbs and have at least one slice of meat a day. It looks like I do everything right - however, my weight is not going down lately. I guess something is not working for me.
No, thats not true. Dumping is different for everyone and for different foods. It's not always very bad either.
It also sounds like you are not getting in enough calories and your body has gone into starvation mode. This stops you from losing weight because your body thinks it is starving and holds on to everything you put into your mouth.
Try to get you calories up to 800-900 calories at least and get mostly from protein. The more protein you can get in the better you will feel (and lose). Good luck.

HI Lena,
I've gotten the runny nose thing too - but usually that ends with me throwing up, something I seem to do every day (except the last couple). It might be dumping, but it may also be nausea because you eat too fast and/or too much at once. When you get nauseous, you develope more saliva, and more fluids all together which might cause the runny nose and sneezing. I noticed that I tend to eat to fast which causes me to eat too much because I don't realize I am full. Then me and my oversensitive gag reflex spend some quality time hunched over the toilet. I also noticed this only happens at night - after dinner.
The last two nights, however, I have been vomit free! YAY!! I think because I have taken less food, and consiously eaten slowly. It may also have something to do with the pouch healing.
I have never had dumping. I am so terrified of dumping that I wont eat anything with sugar, and really concentrate on high protien foods (I also find that protiens are what I want when I start to feel like I should eat)
Anyway, I would suggest you go back to your one ounce cups just to keep yourself in check. One ounce, if you are hungry 15 minutes after finishing that, then have another one ounce. Perhaps that will help you slow down and not overstuff and therefore end the sneezes.
