coughed up blood, 6-weeks post-op
Hi fellow Nov. surgeries,
I've already posted this query on the Connecticut board and the main board...so sorry to bore anyone..
I had laproscopic gastric bypass on Nov. 22 and have had persistent discomfort and some pain in my abdomen.
On Christmas Eve, at about 11:30 p.m., I spit up blood.
I called my doc, got his partner, and he said it sounds like an ulcer. Told me to take prevacid (I have some on hand) 2x a day until Monday, when I see my regular doc for an already-scheduled followup.
He told me I could go to the ER, but they would only admit me and stick an IV in me; no one's around to do an endoscopy because of the holiday.
ANyone else have an ulcer? Anyone else cough up blood??? What did your doc do?
My doc requires us to be on liquids and soft foods for the first 4-6 weeks, so I have been eating eggs, cottage cheese, etc., when I'm able to eat something. Which, frankly, has been really challenging these last couple weeks as I just haven't felt like eating.
Will my diet continue to be liquids and soft foods?
If it happens again, the doc told me to go to the ER, and I will.
That's it for now. Hope to hear from anyone with similar situation.
Thanks for listening.

Hello Heather hate to hear that you have spit up blood. Maybe I can ease your mind. ( I have Endoscopy exp.) Was the blood dark (old blood) or bright red blood (fresh blood)? If it was dark it could very well be from the surgery its self. Bright blood that sounds like an ulcer or maybe a little bleed around the surgery site itself. I would thank that it is to early to be an ulcer but it could be around the surgery site. Also was it alot or a little? Did you strain to throw or spit it up? Have you been throwing up? It could be from your esphagus which is called a Malory wise tear (not realy serious) If I was you I would do straight liquids until you see your Dr. He may go on a scope you tomorrow. Hope this helps and good luck to you.
