Hi.. I had my surgery the day before you. I actually lost about 20lbs in the first 10 days then it pretty much slowed down. I was losing 2-3lbs a day and then down to 1lb a week. I just keep eating what I was supposed to and stepped up the walking. I still have trouble getting all my water in. I take in about 50-60 gms of protein a day. I can't do the protein drinks yet, I have tried many and I just can't get them down. I eat egg beaters with american cheese, refried beans with low fat shredded mexican cheese. and I have also tried boca chicken patties w/american cheese. I have eaten tuna w/light mayo..then melt american cheese, kinda like a tuna melt w/out the bread.... The cheese really makes it easier to get down, keeps things moist. I have also done cream soups and cottage cheese. All done with the cottage cheese for a while...I can't even look at it anymore..haha.. Just some suggestions... It is really hard to figure stuff out on your own and ask questions. I really find the website quite helpful! Thank goodness!! I'm sure you will get much more advise, also try the main message board..there are people who have much more experience than me...and can probably give better suggestions... Good luck! And happy holidays!! Jen

I had open RNY as well. On my fourth week I had only a 3 lb loss which made a total of 22 lbs as well since surgery. I was somewhat disappointed as well, I can't blame you....everyone seems to think it because I am not eating enough protein.... but my doc says I am on track. Another person who had surgery two days for me experienced the same thing.... her weight loss on her last weigh in was only 1 lb and she lost 22 the first two weeks...so far I have the feedback that it is because the body has gone into starvation mode and is trying to cut down on the weight loss by hanging on to all the weight it can and making you very, very tired so you don't use very many calories. Doesn't look like I will lose very much this week as well. Oh well, everyone keeps telling me to trust the process and keep eating. That's all I can do now, until the doc tells me different! B

No trouble with my period so far - will start on the first if everything is as usual. But finally the scale has begun to tip again for me - same kind of thing - 25 in the first two weeks - then NOTHING! BUT I have lost some inches I know it - I can feel it... and then just yesterday the scale moved two pounds down. I'm trying to keep it in perspective - One - just losing is great - this NEVER happened with any other diet - & Two - I really don't want to have plastic surgery - so if I lose a little slower - maybe I'll have less sag?

Hi Kay. I've only had one cycle since my surgery, but it was normal. As for the weight loss, you can't always go by the scales. You can lose inches without actually losing weight. Keep following the doctor's orders and you'll do just fine. Try to up your protein (and water) intake if you can... it will make a difference! Are you exercising? Try to get in some walking and/or some cardio as often as you can. I think most of us may get a little discouraged when the scale stops moving temporarily, but hey, you've already lost 22 pounds! That's FABULOUS!! Try to stay focused on the big picture, eating right and exercising and the weight will come flying off before you know it. Christina 285/248

Kay, I have also had problems with my period. I have had 3 this month and both my surgeon and OBGYN feel it's normal conditioning to our new bodies. They said that we are experiencing so many changes including hormonal, that it should take a few months to get regulated.Ihad an RNY on Nov. 16 2004. I also had a standstill that scared the heck out of me with weight loss! Again, doc said normal and due to so many things trying to regulate themselves at once. Give it some time and keep walking or whatever you've been cleared to do physically. It gets better! Good Luck! Jenn 289/253

I haven't had a period since surgery (fine with me), but I hear lots of us have issues with periods after wls, so I'm not too concerned. My doc and nutritionist both told me it is imperative to eat 1200-1400 cals / day to maintain weight loss and prevent your body from going into starvation mode.

1200-1400 calories per day??? I was not given a calorie guide from my doc but I use fitday.com and I range 600-900 caloried per day. I just could not imagine trying to fit another 500 calories in without Are you able to get that much in? Just curious how others are? Janet

Janet, I'm with you! I use fitday too and I'm 500-650 a day! I have shared this b4 but my doc says no protein shakes only adding protein powder to food! Protein shakes do help you get the calories up! Summer

Well I have had a long, but very light and hardly any cramps- more nauseaus. This is totally BACKWARDS from my usual menstration cycle. 1) I was on time (I'm usually a week or two late), 2) I had no-mild cramps (I am usually in tons of pain before and during), 3) It was extremely light (It's usually VERY.. and I mean VERY heavy), 4) I'm usually not too nauseaus during (usually I'm not hungry but it's not like a 'sick to my stomach' as this cycle was) and 5) I typically have long periods (7 days) but this one lasted like 11 days. So I for one am HAPPY with this change. I just hope it lasts like this... one of the reasons I had this surgery was to help with my menstrations. Although I think I will wait at least 3 months before I say it has really helped that part of me
