Thank you Laura and Andrea. I have had 2 c-sections and have heard different stories from people. Some say that it was easier than that some say it was harder. What scares me is the fact that everyone reacts differently to this surgery and until I have the surgery I dont know how I will react. Will I be on the success side or I will be one of the people with complications. I try to be positive but when I stop and think of all the things that could happen I naturally get a little apprehensive. Thank you all for the support. I probably should have written on here before my surgery.

Melissa: I totally understand your fears and hesitations. I had two c-sections with my children (they are 6 and 10 now). I just underwent surgery on 11/22. The surgery is much like the c-sections, but it is higher up on the torso. The most pain that I have is the diaphram and taking deep breaths. Most of that is from the removal of my gallbladder the same time of surgery. I too was very nervous, but I knew I was doing this for all of the right reasons. I did if for my health, and for my self esteem, and also for my kids. If you are in that mindset that it is definately what you want to do you will be ready for it. You need more time to come to terms with this. Don't jump into it if you are not ready! Jeannette

Hi Melissa Just wondering if you have thought about having the lapband surgery instead. I also have a baby and i have had 3 c-sections. I had lapband surgery on the 29th and it really was a breeze compared to c-section. I stayed in hospital 1 night and walked to the shops 2 days after surgery. you are welcome to read my profile. I was also afraid of complications with other wls, but i am so glad i have had this done. Anyway just a thought!!!

Hi Hon! PLEASE ask your doctor for something you could take the day before surgery & the morning of. If you could just get your nerves under control a bit, I think you could think clearly about the benefits vs the risks of this surgery. I am only 2 + weeks post-op, and I can tell you that out of all the surgeries I've had, this one was truly one of the easiest. I had lap RNY, and NEVER have had pain. Not even in the hospital. Deep soreness, yes, but that has been completely tolerable. I used my Morphine pump twice (I think) right out of the OR. I think because I was still in a stupor, and someone told me not to be a hero and to use the thing if I was uncomfortable. It made me so nauseated, that I never used it again. I didn't even need a Tylenol after that. I was at the point that I knew I did not want to continue my life the way I was. Not that I wanted to end it, that wasn't on my mind. I just knew that there had to be something I could do to gain control of my health & my life. This surgery was the answer. I will admit that the evening after my surgery, I woke up and almost had a panic attack. It took me a bit to get myself under control, but I did. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning. I was uncomfortable, had a slight fever, was a bit nauseated and kept thinking, "WHAT have I done to myself??????" I've heard that this is normal. After that, I began to focus on all of the reasons that I had the surgery. I focused on the future. I had an abdominal hysterectomy many years ago, and the recovery from that surgery was MUCH worse than this one. I pray that you will have peace about going through with the surgery. Good luck! You are not alone. I have had 2 c-sections. And this surgery was a WHOLE lot easier than they where. To conquer your fear is something you have to do on your own. YOU have to decide what is more important your health and well being or you being able to eat what you want when you want. You have to small kids and they need you and if you are over weight you are not going to feel like getting out and playing with them and you and them are going to miss that alot. Good luck to you Ann ps I had my surgery on 11-10-04

Hi Melissa, I just had surgery (RNY) on the 22nd. Like you I was terrified! I have four daughters and went through the same anxiety you did - and I almost backed out. One person mentioned that you should ask for something to take to calm you. This is definately an option and I wish that my anesthesiologist would have given me the happy medicine before I went to the OR. Here is how it went: I went into the Pre-Op room, filled out the paperwork, had an IV started with just some fluids, got a small shot to prevent clotting. My mother and husband came in to visit with me until it was time to go to the OR. The surgeon came by and the anesthesiologist came by to introduce himself. When my mother and husband left, I started to cry and wept clear into the OR. I remember getting on this skinny table with arm rests, a nurse handing me a tissue, and several people moving around. Then I remember asking someone if they wanted the tissue (still crying) and the next thing that happened is my mother and husband were there with me and I was in my room. I saw them then closed my eyes and went back to sleep. An hour later I was pushing that magic button (the one that gives medicine) and getting out of bed and taking a walk. I was in for 2 days - the button was taken from me on the second day - and I haven't taken a pain killer since. Getting through the surgery is the easy part. The hard part comes afterward - drinking protien drinks, trying to get enough fluid, and all of that. But, it is worth it! Best of luck - no matter what decision you decide is ultimately the right one. Danielle

Melissa, How I got over the fear is my faith. I believe that God is in control. I believe that if He wanted to take me home on Nov. 5th I didn't have to be on the operating table for him to do it! God bless you and give you peace, Donna

Melissa let me tell you what happen to me. I had my surgery on 11/30 and I was so scared my 13 year old stayed home from school to go with me and my boyfrend that baby help me so much that morining I was nervous when I got to the hospital at 11:30 I had to wait for about 45 minutes they took me to the back to start an iv and I was nervous I start praying they could get an iv at first they tried 3x finally they did then I asked them for something to calm me down they came me vistral in my iv do you know I don't remember anything until I woke up now mind you I have had 4 c-sections and I had open rny and it is painful that first 3 hours or so and i had to have an demorial pump instead of morpaine. But it was worth it I was up and walking baby steps by 2:00am and then the next day they took my pump I ask for an walker so I could feel secure and boy I start working an lot I am home after 4 day's total. It is hard trying to get all the liquids down but my 4 nurses that live with me really helps me. So I will pray for you that the next time you will just relax and ask for something to help calm you down.
