Post-op shopping list
Hey everybody,
I am making up a "menu" for my husband to shop with (since he will do the grocery shopping post-op), so he will know what I can have. Here is what I came up with (along with some help from the October post-ops!):
crystal light
herbal teas
sf gelatin
diet (non carbonated ) fruit drinks (Twister etc)
sf kool-aide
broths
non caloric fruit flavored waters
country time diet lemonade
decaffeinated teas
propel water
sugar free ice pops
diet snapple
apple/cranberry juice
any broth based soup (strained)
yougurt (no sugar added smooth only )
sf pudding
sf jello
soft cheese (the firmer has more fat )
eggs
instant mashed potatoes
baby foods (stage 1 or 2
cream of wheat
plain oatmeal w/ splenda
malt-o-meal
grits
cocoa wheats
farina
strained cream soups
unsweetened apple sauce
sf custard
egg beaters w/ cheese melted on top
cottage cheese
Another member on the October message boards suggested the following:
1) Bean with Bacon condensed soup: I add a can of skim milk (no****er), then stick it in the blender to break up as much of the beans as possible (to beef up the protein), then strain it and eat it that way.
2) Egg Drop Soup (at home I think you just boil chicken broth and crack in an egg and stir)
Any more ideas please add tio the list!
PS You'd think they'd come up with a little smiley guy to add that is actually eating! They have one barfing....
Donna,
The doc recommended not trying the soft things (eggs grits, oatmeal etc****il about 2 weeks or sooner if tolerated. I don't think I will try it in the first week, but once I am tired of the more liquidy things I may experiment. I don't go until the 22nd, but yep my doc said those things were okay after I go home (2-3 days post-op).
Don't forget your protein powder! I use Unjury right now with my pre-op liquid diet and I plan on putting it into everything after my surgery this Tuesday the 16th!
I had to make a post-op diet plan for my surgeon and when I get to soft food stage, you can also have beans. I plan on making Butter beans(some folks call them Lima) and mixing in some blended up ham with them.
Oh thank you for writing about the bean soup!! I never thought of blending it up. I'm going to have that for lunch today.

Sherry,
Thanks for asking about the cold. I am definitely improving everyday. I coughed maybe once yesterday, but it sounds a little loose (more productive than I'd like) and the sore throat is still there though 75% better. I think I will be alright with a week to go yet. The important thing is that I am improving daily. I am not going to be sure until Friday though, when I plan to make that decision (whether it is gone enough to go under the knife). I've seen too many people die from infection that started small and killed them later, to take chances. Plus I have an autoimmune disease, so I am always a little immunocompromised; not worth risking. Though I am pretty confident I will be ready...I know it's all that talking to God I have been doing! He is awesome!
Hugs,
Lori
Let me recommend you pick up some Chocolate Carb Countdown. It's AWESOME!!! You can find it in the Milk section.
I would also grab some Low fat Peanut Butter (Peter Pan makes a whipped) to add to your shakes and stuff.
ALSO, bananas are great mashed. Other frozen fruits will taste great in shakes as well.
My Doctor even said Potted Meats are ok but I haven't tried them.
Get Potatoes and Skim milk and make a batch of Potatoe Soup. (boil potatoes until tender, don't drain off the water...add skim milk to desired consistency and simmer over low/med heat until thickened)...add Low Fat shredded cheese to your serving for protein. It has been my mainstay!
If you find that you can't tolerate the shakes, don't despair. I have found that with a little bit of planning, I am able to get in all of my proteins in my meals (over 60 grams!)
Good luck,
Myra
