If something could go wrong it has!!
I went for my pre-op surgery this past Thursday, and all went well I am scheduled for surgery on Nov 12, @ 1p.m. I got home that evening to my husband telling me that he had been FIRED!!!!
All I could think of at that time, is omg I am not going to get my surgery. We have no insurance. I know that sounds stingy, but I have worked so hard to get this far. Last year a week before Thanksgiving he was laid off and the holidays wasnt great at all. Now this year the same thing again, but my new life may not happen. I am worried about all sorts of things right now. I have to call his employer on Monday to see if they will allow Cobra. I am not sure if they will allow it. But all this happening at the last minute. I need everyones prayers please.
Thank you and God Bless
Jackie C
I know in Indiana the employer has to give you 30 days and they usually send a letter via certified letter stating this (since by law they are required to give notice, they send certified to cover their butts). I am also pretty sure this is a federal requirement, and not an Indiana law. You should do some checking. My husband's employer offered cobra (very high premiums) for 3 years. Do some checking before you get yourself all worried and good luck!
Jackie, I know your anguish. Take a deep breath. If your husband was fired on Nov. 12, 2004, November's premium should already be paid and you would be covered until the end of the month. That is how it worked on every health plan I've had for the last 25 years. Forget his company though - they fired him - perhaps they won't be so helpful or timely and that will only make you more nervous. Call the insurance company directly yourself. Also I believe if his company had 20 or more employees COBRA has to be offered by Federal Law, if there were less than 20 employees in the group perhaps the company has a conversion policy available for you. Good Luck - I'm sure it will work out.
