I am really scared.... I have been in the emergency room twice this week. I cannot have a bowel movement they say my bowel is full. Last night I did an enema and NOTHING. I was in serious pain on Tuesday, it has gotten better but still pain and NO movement. I had surgery November 2003 and had no serious problems till now. I have not been able to barely eat for 2 weeks plus, I feel sick, I feel like everything is backed up. I am now getting scared that something is seriously wrong. My surgeon is on vacation, I am seeing my family doctor today. But what is wrong? Hospital says it is not a bowel obstruction. They gave me an enema last night and told me to take about 3 or 4 stool softners a day. I took 4 yesterday, plus did the enema last night and still nothing. I should be done losing and now because of this problem I have lost 9 pounds in the past two weeks cause I can barely eat anything. I cannot afford to lose any more. I am already a size 4. PLEASE I need advice and encouragement........

try the soda phospha like we had to take to clean our bowels prior to surgery. It will clean you out. Why did the doctor not suggest it. It is a major laxitive. Is it safe? I would try it.Deb

My sister, who had WLS a little over a year ago, recently got out of the hospital for additional surgery. She had been fine, wonderful actually. Anyway, she ended up having emergency surgery because of an adhesion in her intestine. She had not had a bowel movement and finally got so sick that she was vomitting every 15 minutes. They did tests, told her everything looked okay. Hooked her up to suction, still no relief. Finally did a CT scan. Found the adhesion and scheduled surgery. While in there, the surgeon also found a stricture at the anastomosis site in the lower intestine. Please, please ask about adhesions/strictures/obstuctions, etc. She is doing great now (even had a tummy tuck recently) and is so happy with her results. I hope you will be feeling better soon. If you need to, go to the hospital again. Ask for additional tests. Have they done an abdominal CT scan? I know how miserable you are, my sister thought she was dying! My best to you and please let us know what happens! ~Jennifer ~Medial Gastric Bypass/Nov. 2003 ~size 10 now and very HAPPY! (scheduled for tummy tuck next month!)

Hi Diane; hope everything is going better. I too am having trouble with bowel movements. My primary doc told me to take milk of magnesa (sp??) Phillips.. daily. I did try the bowel prep goop phos..... stuff and it does nothing for me. but taking 4 tablespoons of Philips; and lots of water; seems to help. I still have pain in my left side; they have done a CT Scan and small bowel series. next they are going to go down with a camera and look around. keeping you in my prayers.

I am so sorry. Beleive me I know how you feel. I had that problem shortly after surgery. I was rushed to the emergency room. Throughout the ordeal, my legs, for reason, hurt badly. While in the emergency room, I was given soap enemas and laxatives, but nothing helped me. I had to manually use my hand to get the feces out of me. I found that the vitamins that we take cause constipation sometimes. I decreased my vitamims and dranked lots and lots of water. I do not reccommend decreasing your vitamins unless your doctor tells you its ok, but that was the only thing that helped me. At that point I did not care because I was in a lot of pain. I know, for me, drinking lots and lots of water or liquid was the major thing that prevented it from happening again. I hope you are feeling better.

Hi Diane, I don't know who to help other than to offer my support. One thing that helped me when I had my surgery and some complications was that I looked at everything in a positive. I did not look at it as a negative. I went 3 days where I was not able to eat or drink anything and ended up in the hospital because I was dehydrated. I threw up everything that I ate/drank. I looked at it as an opportunity to learn how I felt wehn I was sick. When I threw up I looked to see what it was that I was trowing up - too big, ate to fast, etc. and was able to learn that when things did not sit right how to throw up and feel better. It made my feel better even though I felt like hell. I know this may not be something you need, but stay positive and see what lesson you are learning so in the future if this happens again, you know how to deal with it. Steve Londino
