sharp pain turned into emergency surgery!!!
Hi,
i have had a really textbook surgery and recovery. i haven't had really any problems that alot of you have had. i have been extremely lucky.
until yesterday, wednesday morning i woke up and everything was fine a day like any other. i went to work and about 7:00 am i started getting small sharp pains in my stomach all the way across around where my first tiny fat roll sits.
anyway, i work in a factory so i was trying to work really fast and the pains kept getting worse and worse. finally it occured to me that i hadn't done #2 in a couple of days, so i thought, i must be constipated so i took a couple of exlax but that didn't work either. so around 11:00 am i told the owner what was going on and he said call my doctor and go home.so i did so and my doctor was on vacation and his 2 associates one was off for the day and the other was on her way to concord. but the secretary paged one of them and he told me to take milk of magnesia. but my friend said to try and enema. so i tried that then the milk and both were a no go except the pains by 1:00 pm are now like a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.
i was getting really worried and so i called the doctor back who said to come down to the emergency ward so have a full ab workup + blood work and a ct scan. no problem, except i was starting to feel light headed so i called my husband to come home and take me. well, to make a long story not quite totally long, i ended up with pain about 15 on a scale of 1-10 and throwing up 4 different times before they told me i had an obstructed twisted bowel and also an internal hernia!!
they did emergency surgery on me and i was admitted and was in alot of abdominal pain but no worse than the gastric surgery ones. also, he used the same holes he made during the bypass so i still only have a few scars.
they let me come home this morning with liquid roxicet for pain and i am loopy but happy the pain in the stomach is gone!!
they said that my bowel had twisted around and caused a blockage on the right side. and then i also had an internal hernia. the whole operation was about 2 hours and they said that was the first time they had heard of that happening. has anyone else ever heard of that happening to anyone??
oh well, getting sleepy just took more medication let me know though ok.
i feel so much better now! the doctor's said they checked out everything while they were in there and it all looked great!!
thanks for listening everyone
Stacy
wow.. I'm glad they got you in and found the problem right away. I was having some pain; but it was found that my large intestine moved up under my rib-cage; and that I need to take a laxative to move things along. Hernia's are no fun; had one repaired about 4 years ago. Take care of your self.

i dont know if im doing this right or not i dont usualy write on message boards but saw you had twisted intestines you are very lucky they new what you had and that you had such good drs who cared. my daughter had the gastric bypass surgery in jan 2003 and on march 10 2005 two years after her surgery she died from twisted intestines dew to complations from gastric bypass surgery we die not know or were ever told that this was a complation of this surgery. we went to the er and was told she was constipated and they gave her an enimal and nothingh happened so they sent her home with pain meds she got no better and i took her back the next day and they called the dr that had done her surg and he refulsed to see her and said there was nothing wrong with her . my daughter died that night at age 29 and lef three small children. i and so glad you are doing so well and had such good dr. we live in a small town in south carolina and the drs here have almost no follow up care so i hope this will help someone else to be aware if they start having problems like this not to wait and dont listen to the dr if he tells you nothing is wrong because if i had not listened to the drs and beleived they knew more that me my daughter might be here today. my name is kay sloan heather sloan mother thanks for letting me share this
