Ok, before surgery I was addicted to dr pepper. I got my blood work done at that time and I was told I was full blown type 2 diabetic pretty much becuase of the dr pepper addiction. well, I wanted surgery so bad that I immediately stopped all forms of sugar including my drinks. I dropped 15 pounds within that month. My husband is a dr pepper a-holic so it makes it hard. I was hard then and still hard now. Thing is, I drink Diet dr peppers now pretty much daily. I know I shouldnt do this. I did clarify with my surgeon though, that carbonation does not cause stretching of the pouch but rather the fizz is not 'good' for the pouch and cause cause lots of gas. anyways I cant seem to kick the habit. I dont like water at all unless im eatting mexican food. Are any of you going through this?? I figure as long as Im not in any pain than i dont see why it hurts to continue with my diet drinks. what do you all think? are yall drinking them? thanks for the help guys Jennifer -65

Hi Jennifer I do not drink soda, i don't have any sugar either, but that is just me. i find that if i just tell myself that i can't have these things or i could get sick that i can stay away from them, but where you have had these things after surgery that will be harder. i drink plain water but do not particually care for it. what i do is crystal light. right now i'm into pink lemonade flavor and that makes me happy and i don't miss the soda. the fizz and gas can't be that fun i would think. you might want to try alternatives. hope this helps you Stacy 11/14/03 -95 good luck !!

Jennifer, I drink my soda!!!! (diet) Can't live without it. I only drink about one can a day though. My doctor says it is o.k. as long as I drink other stuff too. It must not be hurting anything, I went this week for my 4 month check-up and he said that I was doing fantastic. Lorna Shumate 242/169/135?

Hi Jennifer! Yes ,I do drink diet coke and diet Pepsi.I only started recently though.Pre surgery, I could drink up to 2 litrers a day.Now ,I limit myself to a tall glass with ice,3 times per week. I plan for them and dream about them. You see, when I drink these diet sodas it makes me feel hungrier.I feel as though I need to eat something after.Maybe its the bubbles?? who knows??I also find ,that they make me retain water. Take care Tracey.

When I saw your title I thought we were going to be talking about alcohol! I was a diet coke addict before surgery now I can't drink them at all. I take one tiny sip and then belch for 5 minutes--it isn't worth it. About alcohol...I know we aren't supposed to drink any for 6 months (May 3 for me) but I have taken a tiny bit here and there and guess what? Since my surgery I have lost ALL tolerance for alcohol. I am a cheap date now! Giggle. Carolyn Moore DS 11/03/03 317/237 (-80 as of Friday)

LOL! I thought we were going to discuss alcohol too! I miss my Bacardi and Cokes! I haven't tried any alcohol since a week before surgery. Just don't want to mess with the sugar. I'm afraid to try it and find out that I don't have a problem ingesting sugar. Sometimes ignorance is bliss! I don't drink diet sodas or any sodas either for that matter. I used to drink a six pack a day BS. I have kind of cheated by having a Diet Pepsi Slurpee a couple of times but only because it doesn't have the carbonation. They're actually pretty good! They have ones made with Crystal Light too! My mother, on the other hand, had her surgery in December and drinks Diet Coke. The only thing she did different was she switched to decaffinated Diet Coke. Mary

I too was a soda-holic before surgery. I would consume a 6-pack+ daily of some cola drink. I have tried a sip or two of soda since my surgery and it don't have the same taste. The best way to describe it; it taste's like gasoline. It sets my mouth on fire; and burns all the way down. Guess I am lucky that way. I know the soda was a big issue for my type 2 diabetes; and I hated taking the drugs for that and living with the side effects. So for me I drink water; ice cold water; and protein drinks. I've tried Crystal Lite; didn't care for the taste; I have tried; Kool-Aid with Splenda and that is o.k. But; mainly I stick with water. mark g.
