Attention all Open RNY's
I am 12 days out and still very sore. How long does it take for this soreness to go away? I still have to take a "nap" everyday, and at least one dose of pain meds. Can't seem to get comfortable, and am not sleeping very well. I am doing pretty good on liguids and protein. Walking a little (up and down the hallway). Too cold to go outside. Thanks, Lorna
wow Lorna im sorry to hear you are still in pain. I guess my answer to your question would be all depends on the individule, their pain tollerance and maybe even age. I can only speak for myself but I had my surgery November 19 and am doing great. I took the pain medication maybe 2 days after I got home and no more since. I don't take naps and go to sleep as I did before the surgery. At day 5 I was walking up and down stairs, doing dishes, no pain, sleeping in my own bed almost back to my old self. Today is day 10 and I even went to Walmart and waded through all the customers like a pro and never got tired and went on and on for hours. This evening I plan on getting on my Treadmill and start walking some to strenthen my legs up there starting to feel a little mushy.
Maybe you should try and make yourself walk more to get the soarness out, you maybe favoring your incision. You maybe be weak are you still on clear liquids? At day 5 I called and asked my nutricionist if I could start full liquids because I felt great but needed a little more of something and she said sure if I can tollerate it. I tried cream of chisken soup and ohhhhhh was it good.
Enough about me Lorna, I hope you start feeling better soon and that your soarness leaves also, you should be back to normal now in my opinion.
Hey Lorna,
I'm sorry to hear that you still feel icky. One thing to remember (like we could forget) is that you just had MAJOR abdominal surgery. It's natural to be wiped out and still in some pain.
I had my surgery on 11/11 and still have some minor pain in my lower abdomen area. I hadn't taken the vicodin in several days but I was reduced to taking one the other night. It made me sick (go figure).
I know we hear this constantly as pre and post ops, but walking does make things feel better. I didn't believe it at first, but once I got moving around (went to the mall and later on used a treadmill) it seemed like the healing process really accelerated.
I hope you start to feel better soon, I know how much fun this isn't.

Lorna, I am 26 days post op. MY incision area is still pretty sore. I am going to my doctor on Wednesday to look at it. It's not healing the way I had hoped. Anyway, I take a half of a percocet each night so it can help me sleep. I am a stomach sleeper and sleeping on my back sucks!! This way I relax a bit and then can sleep pretty much through the night. I am sleeping 8 hours at night, and as of a week and a half ago, I stopped taking my naps in the afternoon. It's normal for you to take a nap, don't worry. It's your bodies way of healing itself.
The thing I have learned is everyone is different! Different in terms of how they feel, what they can, the amount of weight they lose. Just make sure you listen to YOUR body, and if you think there is something wrong, then make sure you talk to your doctor.
I hope that helps some!
Eileen
HI Lorna. I had my RNY by lap, however, I have had 3 open abdominal surgeries. I have to agree with those who have replied to you. Walking and moving around is the key and you will feel better as you do. It is normal to nap because your body is healing and that zaps you of energy, but it is important to try to push yourself a little bit each day so you will begin to feel better. Hang in there and I hope to talk to soon.
