I am about 6 days post-op and having strong cravings for something besides chicken broth and s.f. jello. Also, I am craving crackers. I have gotten to the point that I would not have anything bu****er and crystal light because I am just that disgusted with chicken broth and jello. Please Advise R.H.

My Dr. allowed me to have s/f popsicles, they helped a lot. Plus I did not buy regular broth. I bought chicken noodle soup or veggie beef soup & strained it, much better flavor! You can also try making ramen noodles & drinking the juice or a thai/chinese soup broth. The post-op clear fluids really got to me too! I must admit I did try a little applesauce & yogurt before I was supposed to, both went down well. Not that I am saying you should do that, that was just me! My Dr. also allow's us to drink no sugar added hot cocoa made with water, that really helped too! Good luck & remember that this too shall pass!

Hi Renee Liquids suck. Here's what I was consuming at six days postop: Welches no sugar added fruit juice popsicles. They were WONDERFUL. 100% Juice, no sugar added (Grape and apple) Diluted Vegetable soup (strained) Chicken noodle soup (strained) SF Jello SF Koolaid Crystal Light I HATE chicken broth, so I can relate there. I'll probably NEVER drink chicken broth again. The only thing that got me through this was doing everything in my power to NOT focus on the food. It's rough, but what other choice do you have? Keep telling yourself "This is just a temporary situation". Hang in there hon, April

Hey Renee, It was at the one week point that I started really soft pureed foods. I couldn't do the broth, jello thing either. I tried mashed potatoes, and cream soups and SF Pudding. The mashed potatoes I added some broth to make it a little more "mushy". Also, a good alternative to broth is take Ramen Noodles cooking it, then drain the noodles and have the broth from that. It's very tastey! I don't want you to do anything that makes your surgeon mad, but I was right there with you, and I understand how you feel. Hang in there!! Anyway, I hope that helps a little.

Renee you and i had our surgeries on the same day and at day 5, I was going crazy with head hungers. Anyways. I got so sick of it and called the netricionlist yesterday Tues. and she said how are you physically doing and I was like great, im sleeping in my own bed, walking like crazy, washing dishes, on the computer, not sore and thinking about going to walmart to get my mind off of food and she said since I was doing so well she told me to try some cream of whatever soup strained/ no chunks of anything and add skim milk to it to thin it. Well I tried Cream of Chicken thined with Skim Milk like she said and ohhhhhh whaaaaaat a greatttttt feeeeling .The teste was just awsome I never thought i would feel about cream of chicken soup as I do now. I eat 1/4 to 1 oz. hot and i'm full. It took away my head hunger im satisfied and am looking forward to week four when I can try eggssss. Good Luck

What I have found to be a life saver is the fact that I can have Carnation Instant Breakfast (no added sugar) in CHOCOLATE!! I haven't tried the vanilla yet, but i'm guessing it's ok. I am also allowed to have the following: Cream of Wheat/Rice... thin with milk Eggnog as long as it's low fat/no sugar added Fruit & Veggie juices (low sodium V-8 and no sugar added fruit juices) Light, custard style yogurts, such as Dannon or Breyers (no fruit added) Low fat custard and puddings and sherbert Strained cream soups like Lipton (low fat) and Campbell's Heart Healthy soups (make them thin with milk or a mix of milk & water) Sugar-free, low fat frozen yogurt and ice-cream Carnation Instant Breakfast no sugar added and these are also high in protien ( you can also add low-fat peanut butter, 4 oz. sherbert) This may not sound too wonderful, but it is keeping my sanity in check. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

I swear, the same thing happened to me. Surgery on a Tuesday, on Friday night my husband brought me a cup of chicken broth and the smell alone made me choke. I can't even look at the label anymore. Same thing with juice. I have four bottles still in the pantry, cause I can't stand it ANYMORE. I had cream of chicken soup after that. I'd just as soon drink nothing bu****er than those clear liquids again. (I gave all my boxes of sf jello away) Never again. It almost ruined ice pops for me, too!
