Which type of surgery did you guys have ? Was it proximal or distal RNY for those of you who had this type ? How much did you weigh starting out and did it matter as to the one they selected for you ? I am getting anxious now as I am 21days away from surgery ....Thanks for your replies.. Shirl in Alabama

Shirl, I honestly don't know. I just know it is the open RNY. My starting weight was 305 in January, 279 on surgery consult (2nd opinion), and 259 hopefully tomorrow for my pre-op. wishing you the best.

Hi Shirl, Proximal means they take less of the intestine 150cm or less, distal means they take more. Generally they use distal on patients who are heavier and they will lose weight faster and have more malabsorption. When I went to the seminar the doctor said that it's really difficult to state the specific size of intestine that is removed. Because the intestine can stretch the size will always be dependent on the individual surgeon, does he pull or not pull. Here's a link to a previous question in the library, hope it helps. http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/question.phtml?N=1043679028&Search_Word=distal

I am having Proximal. I was freaking out at first because I didn't know if one was better than the other. From what "I" can tell, both have pros/cons. I know that Proximal is the more common (also from what I can tell). However, I too have read that "larger" people have the Distal. I just know that my surgeon will preform it Proximal.
