My surgeon has never said anything to me about distal or proximal, what exactly is this?

Proximal, Medial, and Distal refers to the amount of intestine that are bypassed. A proximal bypass is surgery that is normally preformed. Approximately 18 inches of intestines are bypassed which results in less absorption. In medial and distal even more of the intestines are bypassed which results in less absorption. Although the length of the intestines bypassed is important for the patient to know about the surgeon usually makes an educated guess based upon your weight and physiology. You could discuss it with your surgeon before your date. Congratulations on your upcoming date!
