Topic: RE: Any of my Oct. 21 st people home yet?
Hey!

I had mine on the 21st too!

I've had my 1 week post op check in with my doc yesterday and they said I'm doing well. They cleared me onto the mushy/puree stage which I was excited about, this full liquid thing had been getting old! I tried a little pureed egg salad this morning which was a baaaaaaaad idea. I'm def not ready for things even that "chunky" (even though it wasn't at al!) about 20 min after eating it my stomach was killing me.... so I've been back on liquids the rest of the day. Hopefully tomorrow I can try again with something else!

My left side pain is def still there, but not nearly as bad as it was. Hope you guys are all doing ok too!

Topic: Good to be Home
Surgery was on Monday, 10/26 early in the AM.   All were in good humor except the anesthesiologist (he was grumpy).   Woke up in my room and off of pain meds by Tuesday afternoon in the Hospital.   They kept me until Thursday AM and had me on puree foods in the hospital (cream of wheat, pureed pear; mashed potatoes & gravy, ect . . )

SOOOO glad I bought the two sippy cups; keeps air out & gas to a minimum & easy to measure how much liquid I am getting.   My PT pre-surgery has made it easier in the recovery process that's for sure.   I have had pain meds 3 times now that I am home because I think I am doing too much and have to slow down.   Have my hubby home til Monday, should take advantage of it, eh!?

Other side note of advice:  Mental attitude is definitely plays a huge role in recovery.   There were so many stresses tugging at me the week before surgery (as I have read so many of my OH friends have had also)  - - - - I put everything on the back burner, turned off the energy source to it and refuse to let it get in my way of recovery.

Just thinking of my OH Friends & wanted to let you know I was home & well on the way to recovery.

I know how you feel the same thing happened to me . Except they didn't do mine because my liver looked diseased. and i had a large hernia so they fixed hernia and took a piece of liver foe biopsy. I cried for several hours. but i am waiting for results and if it is not serious i will see what i can do to fix it and try again to have RNY . So don't give up. I'm not

This sounds like a great question for your dietician--s/he will be able to look at the nutrient content and give you a professional opinion on it.  I'd also talk to the dietician about the vitamins.  There are lots out there so I'm betting they could find one that doesn't taste so icky to you.

About the vitamin issue--very important to take them as we all know. :)  My aunt had RNY 9 years ago and she uses OptiSource vitamins.  She gets them from Walgreens and says they're a citrus flavor.  She's done well with them and  also recommended them to me, even though I don't have the malabsorption issue with the lapband.  My dad uses them as well,  because he had to have surgery for esophageal cancer and lost about 2/3 of his stomach along with a part of his esophagus.  He was getting very tired all the time, and his fatigue improved dramatically after he started using OptiSource.

I have heard of that happening--if your heart was doing wild things under anesthesia, the last thing they'd want happening is to have it actually stop in the middle of the surgery, or have other very serious complications happen.  That's surely not the way to solve a weight problem! :)  I think your doctor was very wise to stop the procedure when he did.  It shows he was concerned more about your safety than anything else.

Personally, I think it's a sign to find out what's going on with your heart or if it was an anesthetic allergy, rather than a sign not to get the surgery.  As hard as it sounds and as disappointing as it is, finding out you have this problem with a scheduled surgery is so much better than finding out about it during a (God forbid) emergency surgery.  Once they figure out why your heart had this reaction, I think it will be a lot better for you.  If it's a heart condition, now you know what you're dealing with and can get that addressed so that your heart is working its best for the surgery.  If it's an anesthetic allergy, they can simply use another agent next time to put you to sleep.  If it's some other probelm besides those, they can deal with that, too.  I'm betting once that's solved, this will just be a speed bump on the weight loss highway.

Topic: RE: This Oct. 27th kiddo is home!
I had the option to go home the same night, but our house is an hour away from the hospital, and I just wasn't feeling good enough.  So, I stayed overnight and got as much rest as I could.  It worked out for the best since the dietician came in the next morning and made sure I had everything set up at home with shakes and pureed food and such, and reviewing the food instructions with her was good.  It's a little easier to get up and around today, but I'm still sore, which is expected.  The respiratory people told me to keep doing my incentive spirometry for a week (10 times an hour when I'm awake), and if they told you all to keep on doing it, hang in there with it.  A minute or two once an hour to keep the lungs functioning well, especially for us asthmatics, is well worth it.  :)

You know, I did get a bit hungry yesterday after having nothing but clears, but once I got home and drank that first protein shake, I was full after about a third of it.  It took me an hour to drink the whole thing. I had my first pureed food this morning, and was very happy to have my decaf coffee (added 1% milk for a bit more protein).  I ate tiny bites very slowly and got full pretty fast.  I have to drink protein shakes 3 times a day between the meals, and that takes awhile and definitely is filling me up.  When I get hungry, I sure don't stay that way for very long.

Edit--didn't have the coffee with the meal, by the way.  I'm not supposed to drink anything a half hour before or after the meal.  Thought I'd clarify.  Man, the vicodin syrup works great for killing pain, but makes my brain rather mushy.
