I just had the  Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on 10/28.  I am getting around okay, but energy still not completely up to par.  I had a reaction to the pain meds they gave me, and have hives all over.  Yuck!  Day by day I am getting better.  My question is about medication.  I am in the pureed phase of diet.  Opening up a capsule or crushing it to eat with my "meal" is so nasty!  Does anyone have a trick about taking these powder meds better?  (I have two meds that must be crushed since no liquid exists for them).
So far I have lost 20 lbs in two weeks.  YEAH!

Topic: Surgery 10/20 - 2 weeks - and gaining weight!
I'm sooooo confused! I have been sticking to the protein shake diet since a week before surgery and lost some good weight before Lap Band surgery. But in the past three to five days I've been gaining almost a pound a day! What's up with that? I started exercising three days ago, just 20 minutes/day on an exercise bike, but it certainly isn't what I'd call strenuous or muscle building. I have kept track of every bite on The Daily Plate, and have not exceeded 900 calories/day since before surgery.

The biggest part of my surgery was a hernia repair that required a mesh covering of some sort on my diaphragm. My hernia was the largest my PCP has seen in 30 years of practice, so it was a significant change. Perhaps there's something going on with my body getting used to my stomach being below my diaphragm instead of in my chest cavity...I think it was pushing against my heart and causing high blood pressure. My BP is now below normal, so I should probably bring that up with my PCP...but the weight gain is baffling.

I see my surgeon next Thursday, a week from tomorrow, where I hope to get a bunch of questions answered. But has anyone else GAINED weight while sticking to a protein shake diet? SOOOOOOOOOO strange!

Hi Shymomma,
I was jus curious what hospital you were in? I was at Rose and it was one of the best stays I ever had. The nurses could not have been nicer and took care of my every whim. I also was afraid of the morphine, as I have had bad expeirence before with it and even though I requested something different, my surgeon would not agree. They did give me something to combat it however and I was fine.

I am now going my second week and it has gotten better except the diet is getting really tiring. Hope things are getting better for you rather quickly, each day will be better.

:)

WOW..  I got my drain taken out before I left the hospital. I can't imagine going home with that thing.  I think it hurt worse than the stitches.

I really don't eat  much for breakfast.  I usually do the Adkins ready to serve protein drink cut with skim milk in the morning and then whatever I can think of for lunch.  Yesterday it was just a piece of lunch meat. I ate a couple of shrimp one day this week from the Japanese rest. my friends drug me to.  All I kept thinkin was it was a waste of money lol...  I really want grits or potatos for some reason but have been very strong and not given in.  I made a deal with myself that after I ate the protein if I was still carving I may make a little portion but so far I have not wanted it.

I'm like you, I really do not care about eating too much right now...Trying to just stay pure protein and drinkin lots of water.  I started the bariatric multi vitamin Monday after my follow up appt and will say that I feel better/more energy.

Good luck.  Keep in touch.

Hi.  Sorry, I just saw your reply.  I went to the Dr. today to get my drain removed, thank goodness!!!  I was not feeling too good with the drain, it was very irritating but I feel so much more free with it gone.  I lost 17 pounds since the surgery, I couldn't believe it.

Eating is hard when you are not hungry and nothing sounds good.  I am having a problem with breakfast; I don't know what to eat.  What are you eating?  I have had low carb sugarfree yogurt, an egg or protein shake for breakfast but I would like to find other things.  I would love some cream of wheat but I am on no/low carbs and I have to get in 60 grams of protein (which is impossible at this point) but it's hard to find things that don't have too many carbs.  For lunch/dinner I have had tuna, chicken, cheese, crab, egg but I'm getting bored.  I can start solids on Friday.

The worse is finally over....it's been 12 days and I definitely feel relief from the surgery.   I am now eating soft foods and so far, so good.   After 3 weeks of the liquid diet, everything is delicious.  I am still sore, but the pain is tolerable.  For everyone who just had surgery, it does get better, and for those who are ahead of me, keep posting...hearing everyone's stories is helpful to my success!

That sucks!! I am so sorry you went thru that.  I know not all hospitals are the same and sounds like you got some crappy nurses.

Just think you were smart enough to listen to your body and resolve your issue.  I know you will feel better soon.

Wishing you healthier days!!

Different doctors say different things.  From what I have been told is that a meal for a bandster at a good restriction level is 6 to 8 oz fo food.

I am a week post op and I had about 6oz of soup for lunch and I am good.
