Surgery 10/14-- Pre-op diet started 9/29 and I have lost 11 pounds.  I get 5 carnation no sugar added instant breakfast drinks a day plus clear liquids.  I have eaten one extra protein bar.  I love the diet.  I got hungry the second day and that is why I ate the protien bar.  It was a sample bar from Bariatric Choice.com.  I have passed up my favorite -cheese cake that we order from the band at my son's school and it sat in the refrigerator for 24 hours.  My husband and kids still bring in all the sweet foods I love and I look at them and say if I eat them, I will be sick and drink a bottle of water.  I know I am playing head games with myself but it is working and maybe it will help you.

My surgery is Oct. 15th.  This my 5th day on liquids.  3 protein meals a day, SF jello, broth, skim milk, and crystal light.  Today I was under the calories and protein that I needed so I have to do better tomorrow.

We go out to eat every Sunday after church with my girls and their husbands and today wasn't any different. They decided to go to a buffet.  I took SF jello, crystal light to put in cold water and a couple of boullion cubes to put in hot  water with me.  I ate 3 spoons of  potato soup broth and it really tasted good.   I was a cheap date today...the waitress didn't even charge me for the couple sips of soup that I had.

I am worried about the puree stage.  I don't know how I will manage that at a resturant.   I might have to stick with my liquids for that meal.  I suppose I could take a thermos with a protein drink in it.

I am scheduled for surgery on 10/28/08 and I am finding it very hard to be full on the four protein shakes and two fiber bar  1200 calorie a day diet my doctor has put me on.  My doctor requested I do it for 2 weeks prior to surgery so I started on 10/06/08 I am still having a hard time and my husband was so upset that I was hungry and gently suggested I have some turkey and vegetables.  I did and now I feel so guilty.  I really had every intention on following this plan to the letter but it is so hard to keep up my regular schedule on next to nothing.

However, I did not go over my 1200 calorie a day allowance so does that mean I really did myself harm.  I have lost 10 pounds.  I kinda terrible.

Dont you feel bad for one minute!  Being hungry is the reason you had a meal not your commitment to weight loss!  The pre-op liquid diet is to shrink your liver not test your resolve, no matter what anyone says. WE put ourselves to that test. Harm?  Noooooo, not at all!  Everyone has the intention to follow the diet and some do.
*I* wasnt one of those people  =)  In fact you have lost more than I did.  *I* lost 5 lbs.
So good luck on your surgery and stop worrying!

Hi all. My WLS is on 10/28 too.  I am on a 1000 calorie diet for 3 weeks before. It can be food or liquid or a combination of both. I choosing the food option. I am allergic to Milk and milk products. I have slipped afew times. Nothing major. A tablespoon of peanut butter is all. After reading all the posts I am thinking on trying to do some liquids , if I can find them. Good luck all.

I have found that the type of protine drink makes all the diffrence in the world. If you dont get enough protine, you will be hungry. Period. No other way around it. I have tried 10 or 12 diffrent ones over the past 5 months and found "Muscle Milk Light: by Cytosport to be the best. 25g protine per serving, 195 calories, carbs 11, fat and sugar are very low -  fits within most dietary guidelines. Check with your dietitian if your not sure.  You can get it at GNC online or even thru amazon.com.  10 flavors and all of them are wonderful.

Try putting it in a blender with some ice so its thicker. Sometimes I have found that consistancy is everything. Remember our bodies want to eat so if you make the shakes thick with ice, they have a heavier texture and you will find it more satisfying.

Hang in there
