Topic: My sister had Roux en Y
I'm writing about my sister Gwen. I'm wondering what should her caloric intake be? She had her surgery on first week in October. I don't remember... maybe the 4th.
After she started trying solid food, after 4 weeks post op, she had a lot of problems with throwing up what she eats. She has been able to eat fudgsicles. Sugar free, skim milk 40 calories each. I think she eats maybe 8 to 10, which would be at most around 400 calories from fudgesicles. Besides that, she may eat 6 - 8 ounces or so of chicken in a week. Not per day, per week. She has been able to eat a little salad. I baked some fish and she could eat 4 ounces one evening, and the next day she threw up when she ate one bit, about 1 ounce.
She has been able to eat some very thin crust pizza, California Kitchen "White" pizza, which has only 230 calories in 3 pieces. She never eats much. She has eaten 2 pieces one evening, took her a while, eating slowly.
I'm guessing she's getting around 800 calories per day at the most. Is that too much?
She lost around 26 or 28 pounds in the first 4 weeks after the surgery, and now in the last 3 weeks she's only lost around 2 pounds. Is this normal? Is she getting too many calories.
Gwen is a school bus driver and is back at work, but her back is really bad, ruptured disks, and so walking for very far is very painful, so her exercise may not be what it should be.
She's feeling discouraged. When she went in for her 2nd post op visit a couple of weeks ago, the PA said she was doing well, that she's on track. She said that Gwen's weight loss wouldn't be as dramatic as someone that weighed a lot more than she did at the time of her surgery. I think she weighed about 216 or 218 the day of surgery. She's 5'2"
Thanks for your input,
Melody

Topic: RE: Questions about Vertical Sleeve
It's been almost 6 weeks and I feel great. I have lost 30 pounds, but i have stop losing for now. I also had to have a hernia repair. I do think that it makes it harder to recover. In fact I went back to work last week. I work in an office but I felt good enough to go back. I don't get as sick anymore, only when I eat to much. I have only done that twice. I don't drink a lot of water, but I have been able to keep myself hydrated. I hope things go good for you. The first week I lost 17 pounds and was excited. I go to the gym now everyday and walk on the treadmill for about an hour. Keep me posted on how your doing.

I drink between 70-90 oz of fluids a day. My nutritionist does not let me count soup, broth or shakes as liquids. I drink 50-60 oz of SF hot apple cider mix because my tummy just doesn't like plain water or crystal lite stuff right now. Additionally, I drink 24-36 oz of milk.

My surgey was on Tuesday, I got home around 8pm Wednesday night and I am still in alot of pain.
Hoping this will end soon. it more pain and alot harder then I expected it to be. I can't drink anything cold, my new pouch doesn't like it, and I can't stand the taste of anything but the popsicles. So I've been living off of those and ice chips.
Topic: RE: Is anyone else exhausted?
Try adding a vitamin B12 sublingual once a week under your tongue. It reallys helps.
Topic: RE: How much have you lost
I had lap RNY on 10/12/07. I lost 9 lbs pre-op and am down a total of 50 lbs. I've been stuck for a week, BUT I've had to go from a tight 24 to a 20 so I know I'm losing inches. Keep up the great work everyone!
Great post!

I hap my surgery open for several reasons....
1. My dr recently switched to a new hospital and while he normally does them lap it's new equipment and a 6 hour surgery is not where you want to get use to it.
2. although I lost weight before surgery my liver was still enlarged....so it was safer open.
3. One of my ovaries was enlarged and was biopsied at the same time during my surgery.
4. There were a few other things he needed to look at while he was in there as well.
I do not regret having it open at all. I was up and walking the halls 12 hours after my surgery and my incision has already healed up....no staples or stitches on the outside and the incision is perfectly straight and hell I'm going to have the skin removed one day anyway lol.
