Topic: RE: water
I get at least 64oz of diluted gatorade - plain water doesn't work at any temperature and neither do any of those bevs that contain artificial sweeteners (gee, I'm allergic, how special). About 5 weeks out I could put away almost 100oz (including all my liquid foods). Apparently, I developed an ulcer around week 6, so eating and drinking made me sick; but I still crammed in at least 50 oz of liquids because any less will definitely lead to dehydration and kidney issues. I've gone back to straws because I can get smaller, continuous sips that way and can easily get in 64oz even with the nausea - my NUT just said to watch out for extra air.

Hey Kevin, they gave me an EGD yesterday because everything was making me nauseated. Turns out I have an ulcer, too - pretty much in the same place as yours! I was taking Prilosec; but sometimes it doesn't work for some people. My doc switched me to Nexium, so hopefully that'll work. He did a biopsy, so we'll see if I need antibiotics or anything else. How long did it take for you to be able to eat without getting sick after you started your meds?
Congrats on your awesome progress

Topic: RE: Is anyone else exhausted?
I'm a little over 2 months out from lap RNY and I am still totally exhausted. At first, I'm sure it was post-op healing, but it's not getting better. Of course, I haven't been able to eat enough for the past month because I had an ulcer making me nauseated, but I was at least getting in 500 calories with protein bullets and gatorade. I'm also freezing, my hair started falling out week 4, my nails are really brittle, and I can't concentrate worth a crap. They gave me Nexium for the ulcer, so hopefully I'll be able to eat again in a few weeks... but we're still looking into hypothyroid because it's not normal to feel this drained for so long. I get exhausted just washing the dishes or folding the laundry

Topic: RE: How much have you lost
I had Lap RNY on 10/1 - lost 16 lbs pre-op and 28 lbs post-op. They just found out that I have an ulcer, which was making me nauseated. Surgeon & NUT think the weight loss will speed up when I can finally eat enough (just barely getting in my protein & fluid), but we're investigating hypothyroid as well because I have some other issues. Sure, I'd love some more dramatic loss, but I'm just happy that I've gone from size 24 to size 22 and even those are getting loose. And YAY I have less than 100 lbs left to lose -- still a lot but it's a milepost.

Thanks for the info on the protein bars. I am going to town this afternoon and getting some. I really need to get more protein in. I know what you mean......it feels like I'm always chewing on pills, drinking, or eating. There's no rest for the wicked....lol
I see you are from Minnesota. I have a sister who lives in Duluth. She just came here to Michigan last weekend to see my parents as she hadn't been here in a whole year.
You will do great I'm sure. It seems to me my weight loss is slow but I need to really step up my exercise and then I think it will get moving faster.
Good Luck and TaKe Care. Enjoy the holidays. Hugs, Lynn

Hi Lynn and thanks for replying
the bars I have are the Atkins Advantage bars. I picked up the chocolate peanut butter bars. They have: 19g protein, 1g sugar. 10g fiber and 240 calories per bar (which seems like a lot but I can stomach these)
I kind of wondered when folks mention losing say 20 lbs since surgery if they are adding in the lbs lost from the diet that they have to be on before surgery... I'm trying to NOT get wrapped up in the number game and go by how things feel - it's hard though as I'm a scale watcher...
Right now at least I"m no****ching much of anything! I hate being sick! lol
I've tried to make a listing of what I need to eat and take when... best laid plans though and all that. I swear if I'm not eating I'm chewing on a pill... It's crazy! lol

Hi Lori,
I had surgery one day before you and I have only lost 29 pounds as of today so I think you are doing great! I also thought it would be a much faster process but I had a problem with a stricture and was throwing everything up. I thought I would lose more that week and actually didn't lose 1 pound. I guess it's true you have to eat to lose. I need to do more walking though and I'm sure it will help the weight loss more. I am having the same problems you are with trying to get the protein shakes in. I hate them and I'm not always getting all my fluids in either. It seems there's not enough time in a day to get in all the protein, fluids, food, and vitamins....Grrr! It's frustrating to me but I'm sure it will get better. On a more positive note though I do have alot more energy and my diabetes is soooo much better. The doctor was amazed at my bloodwork today when I went in and how much my Hemoglobin A1C has improved.
I haven't tried the protein bars at all yet but I do intend to. They have to be better than the shakes. Are yours sugar free protein bars?
Take Care! Hugs, Lynn
Topic: New here!
Morning all!
I had Lap RNY on October 30th - went great! absolutely no pain and was moving around fairly well right away.
I've enjoyed reading through some of the posts here and would like to get to know folks who have had surgery about the same time I did.
I started out at 297 and lost 19 lbs before surgery through that "$%@#^$##" liquid diet
As of yesterday I'm down to 258. Not bad but thought I would lose faster. I was at 260 Thanksgiving day and stayed there until yesterday when I lost the 2 lbs. I hate plateus lol
I've been having trouble with the protein - can't stomach the shakes much anymore so looking for inventive ways to get it in. I can put a scoop of chocolate Unjury in SF cocoa and drink it.
I've also found protein bars and have been eating one of those a day.
Water also poses a problem lol Seems I can basically gulp water though which makes me wonder. I can also eat regular mouthfuls but only a couple.
Thanks for listening and I look forward to chattering!
Lori

Topic: RE: My sister had Roux en Y
You may want to post on the RNY board to get more input as that board is busier. Honestly I do not think she is getting enough protien at all unless she is supplementing with shakes or something of that nature. How much water is she drinking...taking any supplements.
It's not just about calories....there is much more than that...it should always be protien first, then veggies, then other stuff like sugar. I had a different type of sugery so I don't want to speak for all of the people that had RNY.
As far as her weight loss we all go through stages where we stall for a bit...don't let her get discouraged.
