Topic: RE: My sister had Roux en Y
Melody, it's great that Gwen has someone looking out for her. Have you posted on the RNY board? I've been away for a bit, so I'll give you my input just in case.
First of all, Gwen needs, needs, needs to be getting more protein. My nutritionist (Nut) recommends 70 grams a day. It's difficult to get that much in, especially in the early weeks when you just start on food. Protein shakes, powders, bullets, etc can help to supplement what you can't get from food. Fish is supposedly a great protein for lots of people. Some have a hard time with chicken or beef (I've been fairly lucky and can eat most of those without a problem.) How about eggs? Hard boiled with a little low-fat mayo is great (like egg salad). I also drink a lot of No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast. My pouch loves that for breakfast. But, I can only drink a half cup in any one sitting.
4 ounces of anything is my max. And some foods are different than others. Some I can only do 2 ounces, so I can do 4. You really need to eat slowly and pay attention to the smallest hint of fullness. Then stop...immediately.
As for calories, all nutritionists are different, but mine told me not to pay attention to calories at all for the first 6 months. So I don't. My goal is protein, so that's what I focus on. Oh, and when she's eating, eat protein first, veggies second, and then a tiny amount of carbs, only if there's room (which there often isn't.)
Good luck to Gwen and you, as her support! Hope all goes well!
Deb

Hey Lori, welcome and congrats on your surgery! Have you checked out any of the websites for journaling? I've found that it's easier to jot my foods down into the computer than keeping track of a notebook. You can also log your exercise, and keep a personal journal if you want. I use http://www.thedailyplate.com/ but you can also checkout http://www.fitday.com/ and http://www.sparkpeople.com/ . The Daily Plate is my favorite, although fitday is a close second. Spark people has almost too much info for me personally, but check them out...they might help you keep track. Then you can just look it up online with your nut, or print out reports.
Good luck!
Topic: RE: How much have you lost
I had Lap RNY on 10-30: lost 19 pre-surgery and 21 since surgery. I plateau'ed right after Thanksgiving and just lost 2 lbs yesterday. Seemed really early and a long plateau. oh well, maybe we are on the move again!

WoW! 51 lbs huh? that is wonderful!!! Keep it up!
Are you still on shakes then?
I was at the nutritionist today and I need to get more protein in and drink more water. I also might be getting too much salt in. I need to keep a food diary again and write everything down. I go to the doc on Wednesday so will also see what he says. I was sick for a week and that may have messed things up as well - maybe I'm retaining water. Who knows, I'll just keep at it and see what comes out in the wash

Topic: RE: Is anyone else exhausted?
Just when I started getting my energy back, I got bronchitis, so my energy level went down the tubes again. But, now I'm starting to get back and so is my energy.
I'm sorry that you're having such problems! You definitely need to make sure you're getting all of your protein and vitamins in every day. I know it's got to be hard though with the ulcer...ouch.
Good idea that your doc is looking into thyroid. You don't really want anything to be wrong with you, but it would be good to find a reason and be able to fix it.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
