Liquid diet pre-surgery INFORMATION

For those who have questions. According to my doctor. The reason for the liquid diet pre-op is to shrink the liver, and keep it from harm duing the surgery. Our liver absorbs the carbs we eat, there fore it is a pretty healthy size. If we refrain from carbs prior to surgery it will shrink drastically and be totally out of the way, as not to get damaged. In part it is to protect us, as well as make the surgery easier on the doctor. Hope this is helpful to those who have questions. Blessings, Angel

Very helpful - thanks for the info. My surgeon doesn't require a liquid pre-op diet, but I do remember his assistant saying it's a good idea to get off carbs and fat a couple weeks prior to the surgery to help the liver be more compact and out of the way. Did your doctor give you a liquid pre-op diet? If so, what is it? I can't seem to find any info on one and want to do one for myself. Thanks Angel!! Jodi

Hey Jodi, My surgery date is the same as yours and I have to go to pre-op class on the 17th. My Dr. requires a 3 day liquid diet and they are supposed to give me the information then. I will bring it back and share!!!! Martha

Oh wow, I didn't realize we were the same day! That would be awesome if you would share your 3-day. I have my pre-op labs, meet with nut and sleepy dr. on the 18th. I'll be excited to hear how you're doing, too!! Jodi

I have been instructed by my Surgeon to start a liquid/protein diet seven (7) days prior to surgery. Liquid suggestions are: Coffee (caffeine free), sugar free fruit juice, Crystal Light, NutraSweet Kool-aide, Diet drinks, Broth (any type) Blended soup, Skim Milk or Lactaid Milk, sugar free popsicles, and Nectar Protein. I am to eat (drink ) six (6) meals per day, three (3) of the meals being protein supplements. I hope this is useful information to all. Let me know if you have other questions Jodi. Blessings, Angel

I started my liquid protein diet Monday, October 1st. I have to do this for 2 weeks prior to surgery. My surgeon put me on Optifast-5 protein supplement meals and 2 supplement bars. I am also to drink 8-10 8 oz. cups of liquids per day whi*****lude caffeine free/sugar free diet soda, flavored waters, fat free broth, SF jello or SF popsicles. Not to consume more that 300 mg of caffeine per day and no more than 35 additional calories in the broth or jello per day. I would assume based on BMI and your surgeon, there would be differences. Blessings to all, Terri

Thank you Angel & Teresa!! I have been eating everything in sight lately and really need to get on the liquids. My dr. doesn't require it, but my med insurance required that I lose 25 lbs prior to surgery, which I did, but I've gained 10 back. I'm so scared that they're going to say - nope, no surgery for you. But even as scared as I am of that, I can't stop eating! I feel like something's taken over my brain and tummy! Okay, so right at this moment, I think that I can do this. You two are making it through and I just need to be strong enough to do it, too. I've worked so hard for 6 months to get to the final approval of my med insurance, that I can't believe I'm blowing it with my date two weeks from today!! I also can't believe I'm rambling on like this - thanks for the liquid diets and I'm starting now - have only had liquids so far today anyway. Do really well at work - but once I'm home, nothing's safe!
