Do you "diet"?
Way to go with this topic Felicia, this really has people thinking and writing here.
I don't diet at all! I will never do it again. I realized last September that my dream was coming true. I was going to get in control over myself and my emotions.
I eat anything I want but in moderation, big time. I don't eat any portion that has over 6-8 grams of refined sugar per serving. It is not will power. I am a huge chicken. I fear the dreaded dumping.
I eat natual fruits and veggies. I don't worry about carbs. I eat normal (probably smaller) portions. Sometimes I find the fruit a little too sweet for me. I never dreamed I would say that! hehe
I don't eat bread or rolls. I ate a 1/4 of a bun once and the thing exploded in my pouch and I was so sick. I will never eat that again. I can eat about 1/2 a peice of toast or 1/4 of a toasted bagel.
I don't eat things that are too fatty either, again another episode that we don't need to hear about.
I plan on doing this for the rest of my life. I pray that I can do this for the rest of my life. My family is eating healthier too.
Thanks for making us think. These kind of messages help to keep us on track.

I think you have an awesome plan. There is no reason what so ever you can not stick to it for the rest of your life. Look how far you have come and your plan has proven to work!!
I hear you about the fruit being to sweet. I remember the first time I had pineapple. OMG my mouth was watering. Took a small bite ( a little scare of dumping on it) and it was sooooooooo sweet that it was almost a disappointment as it overwhelmed me. It was good though but 1 bite ended up being plenty. WHICH IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!
I had that problem with bread several months ago. Now I have no trouble with any type of bread as long as I eat super slow.

Diet No I just try to make wise choices. Stay with lowfat foods and when it comes to carbs I do not totally cut them out, but I try to choose whole grain carbs because we need the complex carbs found in the whole grains to help burn the protein we eat. I do stay away from bread most of the time but if I have some it is whole grain. I do like alot of salads and low fat meats and cheese.
I have been fortunate because I don't get sick either. I only have had a problem if I have microwaved some type of meat so I make sure I do not eat any leaft over meats because that is when I have problems.
But the work "diet" is a discouragement to to me so I just try to think healthy.

Good topic, Felicia. A few months back, a pretty young thing who'd recently put on 20 or so "extra" pounds (though damned if I could see it!) asked me for suggestions on taking it off. I asked if she had ever been on a diet and she told me she had not. My first and most adamant advice to her: "DO NOT go on a diet. Ever. NEVER EVER!"
Dieting is where all that horror began. I was on my first diet before I could recite my ABC's. Learning how not to diet has been a challenge that I am still working on...you can't go 40+ years of binging and starving and just give it up overnight. But I am trying and I'm doing pretty well.
I do not diet and I will never diet again. I limit my sugar intake to avoid dumping and because I have found that I just feel better without all that crap coursing through my blood. I limit bread for the same reason - I feel better without it. I have not eaten popcorn yet because it was one of my 'mindless eating' foods and I have not been ready to re-introduce it yet...but I will at some point.
I like good food and I enjoy it now like I couldn't a year ago, when every bite was laden with guilt and self-loathing over my 'weakness.' I don't go overboard with fats, but I eat them...butter on an ear of fresh corn...yum, you bet I do that. I buy bacon, but wrap up two slices at a time and have had the same half pound in the freezer for ages now. I eat every kind of cheese and love it. After treating myself to a spa day last month, I stopped and picked up a piece of sea bass, some olives stuffed with blue cheese, and a Godiva sugar-free chocolate bar...no guilt...it felt good to add these treats to my day.
I didn't go through the surgery and everything so that I could endure the same quality of life I had before surgery. Life is to be enjoyed. Good food is an enjoyable part of life. So is good exercise and good health. I'm reaping what I've sown.
