OT: I want to work from home....

Okay....I know this is crazy, but I really miss getting a paycheck, ya know? So, my hubby and I were talking tonight and I told him I would be interested in working from home if I could find the right opportunity. Unfortunately, it's hard to do that as there are so many scams out there. Most of my skills are more suited to a traditional office, but I'm sure there has to be something out there that I could do from home while the kids are in school...and something that would move with me as my hubby gets transferred from one place to another. So...my question is....have any of you tried any of the WAH things? Did any of them work for you? Which ones? Do you know someone who is actually working from home that could give me pointers? I've done the selling thing (sold Home Interiors and Gifts) and did okay with it. But, that's not what I'm interested in as it requires way too much time away from my home and family at night. I need something I can do either when they are at school or in bed. Heck, I can stay up all night, take them to school and then sleep all day till it's time to pick them up. Not a problem. I'm more of a night owl anyway... Sorry...I've written a novel again.... Anyway, if you have any ideas/thoughts/advice, please let me know. I'm going to keep looking into this to see if there is something I can do....I really miss having extra $$$ to spend like when I was working.... Susan

Susan, I had thought about doing the same thing. I heard that sometime ago GOOD MORNING AMERICA had a show on about mothers working from home. I do not remember the websites that they gave to check out but I do remember that the ones that I went to I could quailify for ever thing but the one reason that I couldn't enroll was because I have my internet with satillite. They do not allow that. Why, I do not know. They want you to have dial-up or broadband threw your phone line or with cable. You may be able to still find something on GMA about mothers working at home. They had alot of great tips....they just wouldn't work for me because of my connections with the internet. Hope checking ABC's GMA helps you out. If you do not see any links to the subject then maybe they have a spot to search the subject. I wish you luck! Lisa S

Thanks Lisa. I'll go check it out now and see if they still have the info on there. I have my internet thru my cable, so that wouldn't be a problem for me. Susan

Workingsolutions.com was one of them that said this: This is the link to their FAQ page: http://www.workingsol.com/agents_page/FAQ.html Q. What equipment do I need to work as an Agent? A. Qualified Agents must have an up-to-date, reliable computer in their home, with a minimum of 256MB of RAM, and at least a 1 Ghz Processor recommended. A broadband internet connection (Cable, DSL, T1, ISDN, Satellite) is required for all projects--sorry, there are no exceptions to this. Some call center projects are not compatible with Satellite, AOL Broadband, or Wireless ISPs. Computers must be current on Windows Updates and certain projects have restrictions regarding firewalls, pop up blockers, etc. A Windows XP operating system with updated patches and critical updates is also required, so agents must be able to upgrade to one of this version before beginning a project. We cannot currently support Macintosh platforms. Call center projects also require a telephone line, telephone headset, working printer, and without exception, a quiet, uninterrupted work environment during all working hours. Looks like you might be able to go thru them as they mentioned satellite....Hope that helps. I'm finding that most of these require a "regular" phone line and we do not have one. We didn't use it - EVER....so we dropped the service and went totally wireless....looks like that may be a problem for me....Oh well....I'm going to keep looking anyway...

Dear Susan: I don't know if this will hel*****t, but it IS a suggestion. I know that you can learn medical transcription and do that from home. It is "portable" as every city and town has doctors and hospitals, and it pays well. The downside is that you would have to pay for the classes before you could start. Just an idea.........have a great weekend! Dawn

Thanks Dawn. I have thought about that....and as I'm a good typist, that part wouldn't be the problem, it would be learning the terminology and the form they use. Thanks again for the suggestion. Susan

Hey Susan Here is what I do for work. I am a merchandiser. I get sent a list of work assignements (in different locations). I have a time limit such as a one or two week period to do the assignments and then I chose when I want to work. I usually go to work after dropping the kids at school and I am there to pick them up at the end of the school day. They really don't even know I am working except for the holidays. The paycheck isn't fabulous but it is decent pay for the amount of hours I work. You have to have a car and access to the internet and that is about it. I was a rail traffic controller for over ten years and it was 14 hour days. The baby sitter was raising the kids! So I took a huge cut in pay but the flexibility of my work schedule is so great! The company I work for is called Spar. www.sparinc.com if you would like to take a look for more info. It is not exactly working from home but there are no bosses looking over your shoulder and you are in charge of when you work. Good luck Tara
