I've started a revolution at work!

So several weeks ago, while out at lunchtime I purchased an inexpensive pedometer. At first I jus****ched it and got a general idea of how much I did (or in my case) did NOT move during the day. Eventually I started finding ways to sneak in "extra steps". Instead of following the standard protocol of informing a coworker of a package arrival and having them come to my desk for it, I woudl pick up the package and carry it back into cubeland myself. I volunteered for extra projects that would keep me on my feet. If I wanted to ask a friend a question, instead of e-mail or AIM I got up from my desk and walked to theirs. I started parking further away and using the stairs etc. I also do some humorus things - I pace while my lunch is in the microwave. I stand up and walk in place if I'm on a conference call etc... This did not go unnoticed. And apparently, instead of my friends and coworkers thinking I was strange (they already think that) they thought "hey, she might be on to something. The next thing you know, little pedometers started appearing the waists of others. Some go to the extreme of making smaller steps (so they take longer to get to where they are going - but take more steps overall)..there are fights over who gets to run a piece of mail or something to another department etc. A few have even suggested joining me on my lunchtime walks around the outside of the building (hey, thats my "me" time - the one shot of peace and quiet I get all day...they're really going to have to work on me with that one). This is the first time in my life that I have ever been a "fitnes" role model - The men think it's funny - but I predict they will be joining us all before too much longer!

Good for you! I have a pedometer, and I keep meaning to get it out, so maybe tomorrow. I have done a bit of the same thing here. Every time I have to get up and go into the shop area (and now the bathroom), I jog up and down the 21 steps to the loft area. I jog the stairs twice each time. (3 times is still TOO difficult, but I will get there!) This gives me an average of 10 trips up and down 21 stairs each day. I have been adding a full walk around the inside perimeter of the building after each stair climb if the phones aren't ringing off the hook. I have been having a really hard time fitting in a conventional workout and I figure that every little bit helps. I have one co-worker who is trying the stair climb too, but I do it way more often than he does. It feels good to be doing SOMEthing. Have a great day! Dawn

That is really cool Patti!! I don't work with anyone except a couple of inspectors, so most of the time I am in the office by myself, but I have noticed that I get up and pace around the office a lot more than I used to!! Holly

That is so cool! I have a Tony the Tiger pedometer that I got out of a box of cereal about a year ago. I started wearing it just after Christmas. It is amazing how quick those steps can add up! My understanding is that we are supposed to hit 10,000 steps per day to lose weight. I never quite hit that mark. I will someday but not just yet. Good luck Tara

I have been wearing a pedometer daily since my surgery. I find that I walk nearly 2 miles a day in my office. I don't call people. I go to them. I have always done that as I find it more personal when they are only a few steps away- or floors. I have started to up my pace. I need to get some of those kcals on that pedometer. I got this one on amazon last October. It is really quite a nice tool. Keep pacing. Aime
