Neurologic Disorder and WLS
Susan,
absolutley great information. It's amazing how many people feel that since having this surgery they're "cured" and don't need to take anything (meds) ever again. Wrong!!!
This article just goes to show that for the rest of our lives we have to be aware to take our vits no matter what.
Thanks for the great info.
Donna, sfy
Hi Donna!
Glad you found it useful! I agree, so many people get complacent and think they don't need the vitamins because they are eating.....what they don't realize is we don't absorb everything we need from the foods and MUST supplement. I hope this opens eyes and prevents neurological damage and even death!
Susan
Thanks for posting this, Susan.
I have to be honest, though...I am suspicious of all news stories I see about WLS. It seems like the press always sensationalizes and only points to negatives. I guess it's boring to print: a million people have had wls and 999, 990 of them are doing just great!
I'm going to forward this link to my nutritionist and get his opinion.
Lisa
Hi Lisa!!
I'd be interested to hear what your NUT says about it. I tend to be pretty skeptical about these stories too. But, I've read on other boards recently that some of the surgeons and/or PCPs are having patients take add'l B-1 (Thiamin) to prevent this syndrome.
Any and all info we can get to stay healthy is great though! Keep sending all the info you get. It's always so helpful and informative!!!
Susan
Susan,
Agree with you. I am skeptical BUT my surgeon does have us BOTH on extra B-1 as it is VERY common to be low on B-1 after surgery. The extra will NOT HURT you so I THANK YOU for your post as it is soooo important. I was low on B-12 when I went to the Dr. a few weeks ago and she talked to me how important it is as well as the B-1 and talked about the problems that can come from being so low on B-1 and they were very similar to the article. You do have to be low on it for some tim ebut it all starts somewhere. Thank you again for posting it. I think it is sooo important that we stay up on all the info we can read. Valid or not this article just reiterates how important vits are which we already knew. If that makes sense.
Love Ya,
Melissa
