Fish Shopping

I'm going fish shopping this week and want to try something I haven't had before. Whole Foods will sell me very small pieces, so I can try new fish without spending a lot. I'm wondering what to try next... I recently tried Chilean sea bass and orange roughy for the first time and loved them both. I also like tilapia, swordfish, and fresh tuna. I grew up on Mrs. Paul's fish sticks and fish cakes, so there's still a lot of fish I haven't tried. We also had frozen flounder sometimes when I was a kid, and I didn't like it, but don't know if fresh is a different experience. I used to think I hated all fish! Anyhow, any suggestions for me? Lisa

Thanks, Felicia - and everyone! I see snapper often. Is it similar in taste to any of the ones I mentioned? What's it like? Is trout only sold with skin on it? Lisa

Some of my favorites: Salmon (probably obvious, but I could live on it) Mahi Mahi Flounder Grouper Cod Halibut Catfish (similar to Tilapia) Can't go wrong with shell"fish" Shrimp Scallops Crab Fresh definitely makes a big difference. Although, I do buy a lot of packaged frozen fillets. They are fine for me, plus they are typically smaller cuts. The salmon I buy makes two meals from one fillet.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mahi Mahi!!! Marinated in Teryiaki Sauce. MMMMM. I just went to a local fish market a couple of weeks ago. They had some Ginger/Sesame Salmon and another kind of Salmon...I think it was like a Sundried Tomatoe Mediterranean with Pine nuts. Both were yummy. They charged like $2.25 per piece, but if I was smart I would have cut them in half and froze the second half. I baked them in my toaster oven on a baking stone. They were de-lish!!! I will get them again. I also got a Tuna steak and it was good, too. I also like haddock and had some good tilapia. And we get Blue Hake from the Schwan man. Have no idea what it is, but it comes individually wrapped and frozen, so we only have to take out what we want to cook. Like that. I usually spray it with olive oil and sprinkle it with some sort of seasoning depending on what I am hungry for...usually Cajun seasoning. Hope you find something you like. Let us know what you decide on. Hugs, Tabby
