Too Much Protein?

I've been making a morning shake consisting of yogurt (12 grams of protein) 2 scoops of Whey protein (34 grams of protein) 4 oz. of skim milk (4 grams of protein) Total of 50 grams per shake Has anyone ever heard anything about trying to process too much protein at once?

I am sure everyone's nut and surgeons told them a different answer to this but I was told the following: no more then 30 to 35 grams of protein per serving at a time ( need to have at least 1/2 hour in between servings for absorption time with it being even better to have at least 1 to 1.5 hours in between for best absorption). I never make anything over 35 grams. I figure with our mal-absorption I am at least getting 30 of the 35 that way. I do know its hard on your liver to process large quantities of protein in single servings. At least thats what I read anyways... I also get in 90 grams of protein a day =0) Hope that helps!! *huggles* Felicia =0)

I had read about the 30-35 grams and mal-absorption thing. The dietician said that it wasn't true *sigh*. What to believe? I am lucky to get in 40 grams of protein if I don't drink the shake. I'm so confused!

Ok if she/he said that wasn't true did they give you an amount that was? I mean some where there has to be a cut off to the amount we can absorb at one time. For example calcium.. depending on who you ask you can take in 400, 500 or 600 at a time but there is at least a "certain" amount given that you can absorb all at once. My Nut said 30, my surgeon said 30 to 35 and a friend of mines NUT said 30-35 so thats why I go with those amounts. Its fine if your dietitian says its not true but she/he should give you an amount to shoot for then per serving. I would give her/him a call and ask what she/he thinks. I figured true or not the general rule of thumb around says 30. I figure why waist the extra if it turns out to be true =0) I have worked up to getting a lot of my protein from foods but I still do 1 35 gram protein shake every night and once in a while I will do half a New Whey 42g here and there if I am short for the day. How many grams of protein did they tell you get get in, for your day? I wouldn't worry to much about it. I am sure you are doing great. Have you had your labs done? If so that would have told you if you were getting in enough or not also. *HUGS* I am sure you are doing just awesome! Go with what you have been doing if its working for you ok!!! *huggles* Felicia =0)

Hi Felicia! I hope I didn't sound rude before! I have a tendency to do that with written words. The dietician we see seems to contradict herself so I guess I shouldn't put all my heallth int the hands of someone who can't make up her mind, lol! I usually get at least 60 grams of protein a day. I only eat 3 meals a day and don't usually do a snack. I just started adding the extra scoop of whey powder last week. (See my reply below.) Thanks for all the great advice

Nope didn't think you were rude at all!!! Oh wait what do I get if I say you were?? HUH HUH *grin* LMAOO Does she know my NUT? I stopped emailing, calling or basically having anything to do with her when I ended up educating HER more then she was me!! I love my surgeon though so I usually go with what he has to say. Also my friend has an AWESOMEEEEEEEE NUT so I usually load her up with my questions LOLOLOL. I eat 3 meals a day to but rarely snack. I feel for the ones that have to do 6 small meals SHEESH when its it eating a meal and when is it accepted grazing? LOL Ok my 2 cents there don't hammer me everyone that has to do that. Do you have time in your day to break up your shake? You would still be getting the 50 in but just not all at once? I think 60 grams a day is about the average. I only know a couple people who are told to get in the 90 so looks like you are right on track there. *big hugs* Felicia =0)

Felicia, You nut cheater ! Ha ha! I'm at my wit's end with mine. One appointment she tells me one thing and the next she tells me the opposite. I think that sometimes we are more educated on WLS than they are. The two that I have seen are young (dingy) women who only know exactly what their manuals say. If you ask them a question outside of their "box", they have that slack jawed, open mouth response of, "I'll have to get back to you" and they never do. *sigh*

YUP you have met my NUT lol you just described her to a T! The worst part is that this info is going out to people who don't have the ability to research on their own. They TRUST every word their NUT says. Scares the beegeebers out of me when I see that. I mean yes we should "hear" what they say but that doesn't make it gospel. We have the internet at our finger tips and its our bodies we should always be learning and never just "going with it" because. Now with that said lol every one should keep in close contact with their surgeons. The nuts on the other hand well these are still the people following the original food pyrimid. That about sums up my faith in them right there LOLOL. Worst thing I ever said to mine was "why". Guess most people never ask her that lol. Guess I am not a very good "just because" type person lol I want answers, reason and justifications for WHY I am told to do something or why I am NOT told do to something. Ok off on a rambling soap box there lol. *huggles* Felicia =0)

Hi Jenn! Like Felicia, I was told the 30-35 grams of protein, so that's what I've been going by. Here's a suggestion, since you said you weren't getting in enough protein if you didn't do the shake. How about altering how you make the shake. Just put in one scoop of protein powder. That will take out 17 grams right there and will put you at the right amount....33 grams... Hope that helps a bit... Susan

Hi Susan! I did start with one scoop but I guess the glutton in me said, "More, More!" I'm going to go back to one scoop at a time, lol. I don't know what I was thinking.
