OT: Tonight's update on son
Well....
Shock and surprise!! He did not get admitted!
We went to the pulmo and they did PFTs (pulmonary function tests) to see how his lungs are doing. His numbers were good. His O2 sats (oxygen levels in his blood) were fantastic. He was not wheezing. The NP was happy.
Then we started talking. When she heard about all the chest pain he's having and being unable to sleep, she got worried again. Did a more extensive exam. Called the doctor. Then we went for a chest x-ray. Came back to the office for the results and to get further instructions. Chest x-ray was beautiful. Looked great. Lungs were filled with air....but it did show that he had just had a bad asthma exacerbation - which we already knew.
So....after talking MORE (did I mention this was a two hour long visit???) we finally decided that he is actually on the mend. The doc and NP both think his airways are massively irritated from the month long exacerbation and just need to heal. And, they are concerned about him not sleeping - which is a huge side effect of the meds he's been on for such a long time.
Our game plan is to keep him home from school until Monday. No exercise until 2/26. He has a follow up next week - if needed. He will taper off the meds (have a schedule to follow on that) and eventually will be all better. They want me to watch him closely because of all the extreme weather changes we are having as he's a prime candidate to relapse again. But, we are now more optimistic about him getting over this and getting back to normal life again.
Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and messages. I couldn't have made it thru all this with my sanity intact if it hadn't been for all of you.
Susan
Sounds like a game plan. Glad to hear your son is on the mend. Hope that the weather doesn't cause another setback and Matthew is back in school on Monday and back to playing his trombone in no time.
Best wishes to you all and to getting him off of some of those meds. You all need a break.
Hugs Hugs,
