I am losing my hair by the handfulls!!!!!!! I get in my protein ( most of the time), take my vitamins so what is going on? I have posted this problem on the PA board once before but I wanted to see if any of you are having this problem and how are you dealing with it. Any input would be much appreciated Allison

Allison, Fortunately I haven't had a problem with hair loss YET, however, my doc did tell me that if it becomes a problem that I could try taking vitamin E and zinc, the recommended daily doses on the bottle. Usually, from what I hear, if it is going to happen, its going to happen and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Eventually it will stop. Good luck! Trish

Sweetie stop freaking out. It happens to most of us after the surgery. It usually hits between 3 and 6 months after surgery and is the result of the trauma of the surgery, stress, and anesthesia. It can happen after any surgery, pregnancy, car accident etc. I use Biotin, a B Vitamin that promotes healthy skin and hair and is essential to the metabolism of fat protein and carbs. You can get it at CVS/Walmart etc. I started taking it the day I came home from the hospital and have had no hair loss so far *knock on wood* Others recomend flax seed, many use it on their dogs for healthy coats and it orks the same way for us. Also keep getting in that protein, it cant hurt to add a little extra if you ask me but check w/ your doc on that one. Hope this helps!

I have not advise on this and it has not happened to me so far*knocking on wood* but I have also hear the same things as what Beth told you in the above post. You might want to check it out and also ask your surgeon on it as I am sure they would have other advise on it as well. Hugs~~ Deanne

Hi Allison! Sorry to hear about your hair loss. So far, I haven't lost more than the "usual" amount of hair so I don't have anything to add to what the others have said. I HAVE heard that Biotin is the best way to go, but you might want to check with your surgeon to see what he recommends. Hope you are able to find a solution soon. Susan

I have been blessed so far and have not had a problem loosing my hair, but my doctor told me if I did to increase my protein. I have even checked so of the other chat rooms for people who are a lot further out from their surgery than we are some as far out as 6 years post and they increase protein and it helps. That's the only suggestion I can give. My mother-in law is 2 years out and started loosing hair about 3 months ago and her daughter told her to go to a salon and buy a shampoo and conditioner that is made for hair growth. I'm sorry I can't tell you what it is called, but I think it starts with a "N".

Thank you to EVERYONE who has offered me advice on this issue. The shampoo is called Nioxin and I am already using it I am taking Biotin twice a day also. I think I just have to be patient and hopefully it'll slow down and GROW back!!!! Thanks again Allison

As far as it growing back, I have heard a lot of people who had noticible hair loss and it grows in completely differently....someone who had long straight hair and it grew back gloriously curly!!! I woud love that! Mine is straight and won't hold a perm so if I do have to lose my hair I hope thats what happens I have not heard a single person say that their hair didn't grow back completely....it wil be temporary.

Not noticing it here yet, Allison. I'd say, ask your nutritionist for advice. Sometimes, it's good to double-check what we're doing. Lisa

About the only thing you can really do to slow it down is make sure you are getting your protein in every day. Other then that Biotin and all the fancy shampoos will help but only with the NEW hair growing in and not with stopping the old from dropping out. The damage was done as soon as they put us under. Now we just gotta survive it lol. From month 2 to 3 my hair was dropping out by the hand fulls. I made sure I got my 90 grams of protein a day and now today I am back to the normal that always falls out lol but no more handfuls. Good luck to you! Hang in there.. At least we wont go bald!! *huggles* Felicia
