HELP PLEASE NEED INFO
Judy,
I know all surgeons are different with their rules, but at my 3 month appt last week I specifically asked my surgeon for information about meds to give to my PCP.....what I could not ever take again. He said the only thing I could not ever take again are NSAISDS, everything else is fine. Hope you feel better.

Hey Judy...
I don't pretend to be a doctor, but I play Dr. Mom at my house.
I would say the cough medicine and the inhaler are probably okay. I know the Zpack is a tablet, so I'm not sure there....
My best advice is to call your surgeon and ask him if you can take these medications. Seems like all the surgeons have different rules about what you can take and when. To be sure you do what is best for you, call the surgeon's office immediately. The sooner you can start your meds, the sooner you can start feeling better.
One last question/point to think about. Make sure your PCP knows you've had WLS and that he/she is familiar with whatever restrictions you have from your surgeon. I know lots of doctors (used to work in a hospital) and they all prescribe liquid medications to WLS patients to make sure they have no problems.
Hope some of this helps.
Susan
Hi Judy,
I am just coming off zpack myself, and a cough medicine, and use a nasal spray daily. I was just on amoxycillan 2 weeks ago, too.... I had spoken to my surgeon when I first got sick, and asked what I could take (prior to seeing pcp), he said at this stage, he has no problem w/anything the pcp prescribes for my illness.
Everything was fine w/me taking these meds. She did prescribe me a super-huge decongestant tablet, which I refused to take, because it was bigger than a quarter! So I opened it up, and poured out the powder in applesauce, and mixed it in - bad move! Totally disgusting taste! So the next night, I took it with a cup of hot tea - and it did not get stuck in my pouch
Feel better!
I'm using an inhailer daily with no probs. As long as there are no Nsaids in the cough meds you should be ok there. The Z-pack is antibiotics and relatively small tablets. I used to be a pharmacy tech but I dont know everything about meds post WLS. Give your doc a quick call and double check. Thats what hes there for.
