pain
hi all,
i am one week post op today, and i am in pain. it is on my left side of my abdomen from the center over. ugh. i am not over eating... i am not cheating. i called my surgeons office today, and told them that i had not had a bowl movement, or passed any gas. he told me to try milk of magnesia (which has worked for the bowl movements, but has done nothing for the pain).
any thoughts? i'm still hoping it is gas. i am up and walking as much as i can... using my incentive spirometer, and checking my temp. my temp was 101.5 on sunday night, but i got it down in no time and it has been fine since.
if the pain doesns't go away by tomorrow morning, or gets much worse tonight, he wants to meet me in the er
thanks,
patricia
Patricia,
Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. The only pain that I had was from the gas, and it is better now. I don't know what it could be. I know that gas can make you hurt in some weird places. Mine got stuck in my chest and in my back between my shoulder blades. It hurt like crazy to even drink a sip of water. I even had some pain up my neck. Hopefully, your pain is just gas too. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Congrats on your surgery and hope that things get better for you really soon.
Hugs,
Sherry
Patricia, I had that same pain on my left side that you are describing. My doctor said it is common to have this pain for a few days. The pain is from the way one of the surgical instruments was inserted and moved around. My pain was last for a little over a week off and on and I took extra strength Tylenol when it really bothered me.
As for the constipation, ask your doctor if you can add a couple of teaspoons of Benefiber to your protein drinks and water.

Hello, Patricia:
How well I understand you. I had my surgery on 10/23/06 Monday and came home on Wednesday. I have the same pain on the left side, can not get up from the bed or chair without screaming and cursing. I have had this pain before I left the hospital. Seven /ten different doctors, residents, students were at my bed at any time of the day or night including Pain Management Doctor. I was given narcotics through IV then the pills Percoset for the pain. All were saying that it is very normal to have pain for 7-10 days. Woman who had the same kind of procedures and was with me in the same room said that the pain she had was kind of annoying not the really hurting one like I had. They did not discharge her the same day as me because she did not pass the gas and did not have any bowel movement. I know a few people after the surgery and almost all of them had the same kind of pain which eventually went away. I can not walk, move etc. because of that stupid pain.
I have one question though: Do you feel hungry?
Take care and I wish you painless recovery.
