I've stocked up on the protein drinks, sf jello and sf popsicles, broth and boullion, crystal light and decaf tea and coffee. I bought small plates, spoons and forks. I've even bought a size medium sweater! I've read many books and spent time on the web reserching. Now I'm getting scared. I have a 6-7 hour drive home and I plan to make that trip on Thursday. My doc says I should be out of the hospital wed and as long as I'm doing ok I should be able to make the trip home as long as I stop frequently to walk. Everyone tells me to bring a pillow to hug. Well, good luck to all margaret

Margaret, Congratulations!!!! Your date is just around the corner. You are prepared and that is great. I am sure that will help with recovery. I too have stocked up and have even started to try a few things to make sure I like them. I hope you have tried the protein drinks. I had Vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast this morning... IT WAS YUCK!!!! I am gonna have to try something else. I am allergic to chocolate - so I have to try other flavors. Wow home the day afte surgery. What type of surgery are you having. My dr says to plan on 2 nights in the hosptial and go home on the 3rd day - for Laprascopic Gastric Bypass. I hope you aren't gonna be doing the driving on Thursday. A pillow or two is a great idea. One to hug and one to rest your head. Keep us posted. Your WLS buddy, Diane

Thanks diane, I'm having lap RNY surgery and he says I'll be going home the next day. I am going in at 7:30 a.M. Maybe that makes a difference. I haven't found any of the protein shakes tasty either. I think vanilla is better than chocolate. I have used the anywhey tasteless powder and blended with ice, non fat milk, and a small amount of fruit or some sf peach or cherry syrup in my magic bullet. That works really good and the size is small. It's better than having to clean the blender every time. Also mix some fuzzy navel nectar protein in too. Not bad but who knows----they say your taste buds change after WLS. That tasteless protein can be mixed in sf jello, broth, crystal light, yogurt or cottage cheese. I'm just not too sure yet exactly how much sugar can be in a meal. Cottage cheese and yogurt both have sugar but everyone says to eat it. Also, string cheese. My friend is driving me home to eureka on Thursday. He has to catch a plane out Thursday pm at 6:00 to san diego so I sure hope we make it. The ticket is non refundable. I'm staying positive I'll let you know how it goes-you are right around the corner too. Good luck- I'm sure we will both breeze through! Take care margaret

Congratulations on your date Margaret! You may want to take some of your own protein to the hospital incase you can't tolerate what they give you. Don't forget to pack some chapstick, you will really need it! The pillow is a good idea too. Elizabeth

Hi Margaret, I am doing pretty good. I was out for most of the day yesterday and exercised on a treadmill for the first time as a post op. I think I over did it because I am so exausted today. My experience at the hospital was good. The hospital has an excellent WLS Program Coordinator. I can't tell you how many times she was in my room to check on me. She even called me the day after I was released. I do recommend that you bring a small pillow with you to brace your abdomen when you cough (they will make you cough a lot) and walk. Watch out for hiccups, they are horrible. It is a good idea to bring your own protein that's ready to drink or can be easily mixed with water or in broth. The hospital had Optisource which tasted good, but hit my pouch like lead. I couldn't do anymore that 2 sips. I was so glad I brought a few Profect tubes with me. My dietitician came by to see me and gave me some unflavored Unjury. That was really good in my broth. When you get home try to get up every few hours to walk, even if it is just up and down stairs. For me, I can get warm drinks down better thank cold. I drink a lot of decaf herbal tea and broth with unflavored Unjury. I drink my water and crystal lite at room temp. The only thing I can tolerate cold is my jello, probably because I let it disolve in my mouth and warm up. Well, I think I need to take a short nap. Feel free to email me with anymore questions. One day I will get around to updating my profile. Elizabet
