Hi there! We had surgery on the same day!!! I haven't dumped yet, and hope I never do! I am so afraid of experiencing dumping that I am super careful about what I eat. I have eaten 2 bites of birthday cake after a meal, don't know how many sugar grams it was, but it was also with other food so I don't think my system would have been shocked by it anyway. I've had a cookie or a small piece of chocolate on occasion - but always with other foods. I believe, and I may be wrong, that if we eat a high sugar food on an empty tummy, the affect is strong, but if we eat it with other foods, it's different. I wish I could explain it better. I've never eaten a piece of candy or anything like that on an empty stomach. Now I have a friend who is almost a year out, called me one day to report that she had just eaten an entire Snickers bar and nothing happened! Not sure if that would be the case if she tried that again - you never know. My surgeon told me that not everyone dumps, which is good and BAD. I just haven't pushed it and hope I can maintain this healthy mindset that I have had for the last 6 months - and never slip back to old habits of eating high sugar foods. I think the sugar tolerance is different with everyone. I've read posts where some people can't tolerate more than a few grams of sugar, and others who can eat just about anything. Good luck to you as you continue your journey!!!! Much love from Miami, Carol PS - I don't know if I was much help to your question, just giving my observations!!! Take care!

I dump. I should say I dumped. It only happened once, but it happened in a big way. Go take a look at my profile. When I dumped it was because I didn't read the label of what I was eating, and it ended up having 18 grams of sugar in the 8 ounces I had. I really don't know how much sugar at a sitting would put me over the edge. I know 18 grams nearly put me in the hospital! I have a huge fear of sugar now. I have had up to 3 grams at a meal, unless it's in a fruit which has moe, but I tr not to eat too much really high sugar fruit. My knowledge that I dump is one of the best tools I hve. FEAR. Fear of waking up on the floor after having consumed unknown sugars reallly put any thought of testing the waters out of my head. There are many (most days) when I have zero grams of added sugar, just fruit. The protein bars (since i cannot tolerate sugar alcohol) do have a few gm of sugar. If the bar says it has 7, then I eat 1/4 of the bar. Well, that's my story! Cheryl I even dump on sugar alcohols...so sweet is just not for me.

I dump. But I can happly say that I got the best of both worlds. I can enjoy one bakery cookie OR a few peanut butter m&ms, but that's all. I have discovered I usually start to shake/sweat/get stomach cramping on sugar amounts over 10 grams. As I said before, I feel incredibly lucky that I can have a little something, but I know what happens if I don'****ch it...keeps me on track without feeling deprived.

Hello, Yup, I'm a dumper. Most 100% pure juices make me dump if I drink more than a 1/2 cup. Less if it's grape juice! I can eat one cookie usually and be fine but I made the mistake of eating a low sugar cookie and a half glass of milk and WOW did I dump dump dump! Big mistake. There is just too much natural sugar in the milk to have WITH a cookie. I have learned to make SF desserts and "almost" exclusively stick to those. I do not go over 6 grams of sugar as a rule. I get into trouble if I do. I have had "accidental dumps." For instance I was eating at a Japanese steak house, happily chewing my protein (sirloin steak) and doing fine BUT i did not think about the shrimp sauce I was dipping my food in and by the end of the meal I was in the bathroom hugging the toilet! Ketchup can make me dump too. I am learning to look at EVERYTHING with sugar in it and find out it's content. I had my first "fried" food last night. Clam strips and oysters. I ate only a few ounces dipped in ketchup and UGH! I was sick sick sick. So I went propmptly to bed when I got home and will now stay away from ALL fried foods. My widdle pouchy is a brat!! Very sensitive and grumpy! lol Sallykate
